Five Baby Red Squirrels / Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven

Five Baby Red Squirrels / Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven

Germany’s Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven announced the arrival of its first Siberian Red Squirrel offspring. The five healthy youngsters were born seven weeks ago and are now old enough to begin exploring their habitat. This Siberian subspecies (Sciurus vulgaris exalbidus) is rarely kept in European zoos, so getting a chance to see these rambunctious and playful little red babies is a treat for zoo visitors — via ZooBorns

Dragon Gate / Harlech House

In Dublin, Ireland, stands an estate reminiscent of old folklore, complete with its own dragon! Of course, dragons are mythical creatures, so this home only has a dragon made of steel which acts as its gatekeeper. The property, known at Harlech House, was originally built in 1798 by a Welsh immigrant. (The estate is actually named after a town in Wales called Harlech and the national flag has a dragon on it.) Harlech House sits on less than an acre of land but is full of enchantment. It features religious iconography and fairy-tale motifs throughout the seven-bedroom home, but it’s the dragon gate that grabs the most attention — via My Modern Metropolis

Schoep, the dog whose Internet photo touched millions, dies

Schoep + John Unger / Hannah Stonehouse Hudson

The world is mourning with a man who lost his dog Wednesday.

John Unger and his elderly dog, Schoep, became Internet celebrities last summer because of Bayfield, Wis., photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson’s photograph of the pair in the waters of Lake Superior. Unger took Schoep into the lake regularly to ease the discomfort of the dog’s arthritis.

People from Texas to Japan to Slovakia gave money to help pay Schoep’s veterinary bills, medications and laser treatments.

It gave the faithful companions another year together.

Schoep turned 20 on June 15. He died 26 days later. On Thursday, a photo of a paw print in the sand was posted on the Official Fan Page of Schoep and John on Facebook — via redwolf.newsvine.com

House Greyjoy Phone Strap / DorkSpork

Our itsy bitsy li’l kraken is made from polymer clay and glazed for extra shine and durability. Just be a little careful of any bits that protrude, because as much as we try to minimise it, clay is only so strong and will not stand up to heavy wear and tear — via Etsy

White Canadian Wolf Pups / Berlin Zoo

White Canadian Wolf Pups / Berlin Zoo

Whose little feet are those? They belong to one of the new White Canadian Wolf pups born at Berlin Zoo. On 29 April, keepers noticed that the four-year-old Ava, who had been pregnant, emerged from the wolf cave looking considerably leaner. It was not long before five pups ventured out to be seen by staff and visitors alike. They sport their puppy coat of brownish spotted fur, but in time will come to have the magnificent white coat of their parents — via ZooBorns

Arctic Foxes / Mulhouse Zoo

Arctic Foxes / Mulhouse Zoo

On 24 April, an octet of Arctic Fox kits was born at Mulhouse Zoo in France. While eight kits might seem like a lot, it isn’t unusual for this species: Arctic Foxes may give birth to up to 20 offspring. However, they may only be able to raise two to four of their many kits successfully in the wild, depending on the availability of prey — via ZooBorns

Bottom Feeders / Mary O’Malley

Bottom Feeders / Mary OMalley

For a series entitled Bottom Feeders, New York-based ceramic artist Mary O’Malley created a variety of wonderful porcelain teacups, saucers, teapots, and vases adorned with and inhabited by a variety of porcelain crustaceans. Mary’s pieces don’t appear to be made by hand. Instead  they look as though they spent ages on the ocean floor where they were overtaken and inhabited by all sorts of undersea creatures before being brought to the surface for display.

If you head over to Mary O’Malley Etsy shop you’ll find many original pieces from the Bottom Feeders series available for purchase. They’re perfect for your next underwater-themed high tea or a meeting of your local Lovecraftian book club — via Archie McPhee

Southern White Rhinoceros / Allwetter Zoo

Southern White Rhinoceros / Allwetter Zoo

One and a half years ago, Jane, a 13-year-old Southern White Rhinoceros, came to the Allwetter Zoo in Münster, Germany from the Scottish Blair Drummond Safari Park and was introduced to the zoo’s bull Rhino, Harry. The two Rhinos got along well and after a 16 month gestation, Jane delivered her first calf, a male, on 23 May — via ZooBorns

Sheldon, Serval Cub / Point Defiance Zoo

Sheldon, Serval Cub / Point Defiance Zoo

Meet Sheldon, Point Defiance Zoo’s baby Serval. In addition to little Sheldon, there are a few other young cats at the zoo right now — Kali the Tiger cub and Tien the baby Clouded Leopard. Keepers get them together for playtime both behind the scenes and now at certain times within public view so guests can enjoy their antics. Sheldon can always be identified by his big ears. That size, along with the ability to rotate them independently, allows them to pinpoint small animals close by when hunting — via ZooBorns

Man dies after cow falls through roof of a house in Caratinga, Brazil

A cow has fallen through the roof of a house in Brazil, killing a man and narrowly missing his wife.

The cow was grazing on a hill behind the house in the town of Caratinga when it stepped onto the asbestos roof which collapsed under its weight.

A 45-year-old man was lying in bed when the animal fell on him.

He was taken to hospital but died a day later — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Planting mangrove trees pays off for coastal communities in Kenya

When Kahindi Charo gathered 30 of his friends to replant mangroves in the 32 square kilometre (12 square mile) Mida Creek area, people in his village of Dabaso in Kilifi County dismissed them as crazy idlers.

Charo recalls that back then, in 2000, the creek had suffered badly from unregulated harvesting that had left the area bare, with rotting stumps and patches of old mangrove trees.

Today, Mida Creek, about 60 km (38 miles) north of Mombasa, flourishes with dense mangrove plantations that provide a habitat for birds, fish, and crabs. There is also a boardwalk leading to a 12-seat eco-restaurant perched beside the Indian Ocean — via redwolf.newsvine.com
