Hermit crabs carry crystal-clear cityscapes on their backs, thanks to a series of 3D-printed shells by Aki Inomata. The artist scans the insides of hermit crab shells to ensure a perfect fit, and then prints skylines of cities like New York, Thailand and Greece in plastic using a high-accuracy 3D printer — via WebUrbanist
On 17 May, this little Jaguar cub came into the world, born to Krefeld Zoo‘s breeding pair Bess and Porgy. This is the second offspring for the parents in their time at the zoo. It was a difficult birth, but mother and cub got to do the necessary bonding for the first week of his life. At that juncture, Bess suffered from an inflammation of the uterus, and had to be treated under general anaesthesia for the condition. Fortunately, she made a full recovery, reunited with her cub, and has been doing a great job of caring for her baby ever since — via ZooBorns
California-based artist Sandy Yoo has created a dangerously delicious pie portraying the likeness of a cthulhu. This pie puts all other pastries to shame (or just physically destroys them) — via Laughing Squid
Caretakers at Five Sisters Zoo in Scotland weren’t expecting any baby Skunks — but one turned up in their Skunk exhibit on 4 June. Later that day they found an even bigger surprise: the second kit to appear was an albino. They believe that the parents are Stella, one of two regular black and white females, and the father is Strachan, an albino. The albino kit has been examined and identified as a female; the other kit has been a bit more elusive and hasn’t been checked out yet. The kits are pictured here at three weeks old — via ZooBorns
A pair of incredibly adorable octopus earrings! Grimpoteuthis, also known as the dumbo octopus, have fins on their head which look like floppy little ears. This is a detail which makes them much more endearing to you. Made from translucent polymer clay these earrings catch the light and look candy-like with their cotton candy colouring. Each octopus sits at 1 cm tall — via Etsy
In late May, Kristiansand Zoo in Norway welcomed two Eurasian Lynx cubs. One of them, shown in the photographs on a 4 July checkup, is a little male weighing about 1.54kg. The other cub, whose sex isn’t yet known, was hiding at the time and didn’t want to come out for a checkup. These little additions bring the zoo’s Lynx count up to six — via ZooBorns
The Minnesota Zoo announced the birth of this Malayan Tapir calf, the first born at the Zoo in more than 20 years. The newborn, a female, came into the world at approximately 9:15 p.m. on July 20, after a 419-day gestation period. Mum, Bertie, and her calf are doing well and are currently off-exhibit together, giving them time to bond. But you can watch them on the zoo’s Tapir Cam — via ZooBorns

On 21 June, a Malayan Tigress named Cindy gave birth to three healthy cubs at Zoo Halle in Germany. Pictured at four weeks old and as newborns, the cubs have recently opened their bright blue eyes and are starting to take their first uncertain steps. For now, they are living behind-the-scenes for some special bonding time with their mother. In about three to four weeks, the cubs will receive their first vaccinations and venture out onto the grounds in sight of visitors. For now, a Tiger cam has been installed to stream live video to a monitor on exhibit at the zoo — via ZooBorns

Derpy, or Ditsy Doo as she may alternately be called, might have a relatively drab coat of gray compared to other more vividly colored ponies, but it is the sparkle in her eyes, the warmth of her smile and her carefree gait that makes her irresistibly adorable. The fact that her eyes might not necessarily focus well all the time is merely icing on a cake, or in her case, fresh blueberries on top of a muffin. In my case it’s a relief not to go through the painstaking task of perfectly synchronising their movement.
The stand and figure are carved out of Philippine mahogany while the gears and crank are made from Narra hardwood. The figure is hand painted with enamel and protected with clear flat lacquer. Derpy stands at 5 3/8″ to the tip of her wings and the whole piece measures at 7″ long, 4 3/4″ wide (wingspan) and 9 3/8″ high at her highest point. She took 100 1/2 hours to complete — via Youtube
The lovely set I made for myself. This set includes the massive necklace, fake gauges and a bracelet. It has a three part gradient from dark turquoise to light. It took a lot of time and patience and I love it. A lot of people at Fanime recognised me just by this necklace! It was a lot of fun to wear to the con — via deviantART
Researchers say a new cancer vaccine that appears to be helping dogs could soon be used in human trials.
The vaccine, developed by researchers at Sydney’s Kolling Institute, has been trialled on almost 30 dogs with advanced melanoma, bone cancer and liver cancer.
Early results found the vaccine not only slowed the growth of the original tumour but also helped to prevent more developing.
Dr Chris Weir, who developed the vaccine, said the anecdotal results are promising — via redwolf.newsvine.com
