Located at Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) is Callinectes Douglassi, a 500-pound blue crab made from stained glass by artist Jackie Leatherbury Douglass and her husband John in 1984. The 10 ft x 7 ft x 5 ft (3 x 2 x 1.5 meter) sculpture took over 5,500 man hours over a 14-month period to build. The stained glass blue crab weighs roughly 500 pounds. The sculpture was commissioned by Anne Arudnel County. As one of Maryland’s state symbols, the blue crab was an obvious choice — via TwistedSifter

Scissor-handed creepy-crawly named after Johnny Depp

The science world has paid homage to Johnny Depp by giving his name to an extinct creepy-crawly with scissor hand-like claws reminiscent of one of the actor’s best-known roles.

Kooteninchela deppi was a 505-million-year-old distant ancestor of lobsters and scorpions, according to a study in the Journal of Palaeontology.

It has been named for Depp’s famous portrayal of a gentle freak named Edward Scissorhands in the 1990 eponymous film — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Have Tuba, Will Travel / morisato54

Leave it to Pinkamena Diane Pie to mop up your worries, real or imagined, with a smile. But if your troubles are with parasprites, she’ll also be needing a whole bunch of instruments to round them up. And no, you won’t be needing an equal number of Pinkie Pies or other musically inclined ponies for that matter as she can play them all by herself. As to how exactly she can pull that off, who knows? Just keep a lookout for stray parasprites like Gummy’s doing, or at least that’s what I think he’s doing.

The stand, figures, tuba and accordion are carved out of Philippine mahogany while the gears, banjo, tambourine, harmonica and parasprites are made from Narra hardwood. The Parasprite wings are made with lacquered tracing paper and the cymbals are from sheet metal. The figures are painted in enamel and protected by clear flat lacquer. Pinkie Pie stands at 5″ and measured as a whole including the stand and instruments is 8 1/4″ tall, 8 1/2″ long, and 4 1/4″ wide. The entire piece took 129 1/2 hours to complete — via Youtube

Dramatic decline warning for plants and animals

More than half of common plant species and a third of animals could see a serious decline in their habitat range because of climate change.

New research suggests that biodiversity around the globe will be significantly impacted if temperatures rise more than 2C.

But the scientists say that the losses can be reduced if rapid action is taken to curb greenhouse gases.

The paper is published in the journal, Nature Climate Change — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Asiatic Lion Cubs / Emmen Zoo

Asiatic Lion Cubs / Emmen Zoo

On Sunday, 7 April, four Asiatic Lion cubs were born to parents Zulu, the father, and Tia, the mother, at the Emmen Zoo in Holland. The night house den had been cleared of other Lions so Tia could spend the critical first days and weeks bonding with her babies behind the scenes. Through the use of a live webcam, keepers have been able to keep a close eye on the little family, and have observed the four avidly nursing, and growing bigger and livelier by the day under Tia’s excellent care. The sex of the cubs has not yet been determined — via ZooBorns
