Monster Graffiti / Benjamin Dodds

I started drawing in my Walls Notebook. I had to cut off the back half of the picture (wouldn’t fit in my scanner). It’s okay though. It wasn’t much more than a few legs from the tentacled monster and the front guys left dr seuss hand, hehe. Photography by: Sherwood Forlee — via deviantART

Clouded Leopard Cubs / Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute Front Royal

The Clouded Leopard cubs born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute-Front Royal recently turned 2 months old, which means they’re big enough to have access to a larger enclosure with big climbing structures. Keepers report that the cubs spend most of their time playing and like to climb as high as they can! They’ve also mastered eating solid foods and are steadily gaining weight. The male weighs just over 4.5 pounds, and the female weighs about 3.5 pounds — via ZooBorns

The biggest addition at Florida’s Lion Country Safari is just a week old:  a 155-pound female Southern White Rhinoceros calf is now on display in the Rhino maternity area of the drive-through safari.

Born on 6 April 2013 to mum Bloom after 16 months of gestation, the baby has been named Anna, after Rhino conservationist Anna Merz, who passed away on 4 April. Merz was a founder of The Lewa Conservancy, which was established to conserve Rhinos in Kenya and has since grown to protect many species of African birds and mammals — via ZooBorns

Nora, Large-spotted Genet / National Zoological Gardens of South Africa

This Large-spotted Genet named Nora has been experiencing a human mother’s nurturing for the past three weeks at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa. She arrived at three weeks of age after having been cared for by two other volunteers in Mokopane. It is believed that Nora, then only a few days old, was snatched up by an owl, but managed to get away. Injured when found, she was immediately treated. She was brought to the zoo in Pretoria about three weeks ago and has been cared for by their vet nurse Sr Marilise Meyer, her adopted human mother — via ZooBorns

Program Partners Joggers With Shelter Dogs

Program Partners Joggers With Shelter Dogs

Running Buddies Enrichment Program provides additional incentives for joggers to exercise by pairing them up with a dog that’s waiting to be adopted. The program is connected with the Stray Rescue of St Louis and invites volunteers to include shelter dogs in their exercise routine.

Jason Schipkowski, Director or Marketing and Development at Stray Rescue, commented that:

Some people who come into Stray Rescue to adopt will say that they’re uninterested in a dog because it may have high energy. After the Running Buddies program, those high energy dogs are relieved of pent up stress and become more adoptable. We assess dogs like people. They have individual needs, so we take the time to learn about each one’s specific behaviours, and we tailor enrichment programs for the dogs with special activities, toys, and anything that engages them mentally or physically

Why Your Supermarket Only Sells Five Kinds of Apples

In the mid-1800s, there were thousands of unique varieties of apples in the United States, some of the most astounding diversity ever developed in a food crop. Then industrial agriculture crushed that world. The apple industry settled on a handful of varieties to promote worldwide, and the rest were forgotten. They became commercially extinct — but not quite biologically extinct.

Even when abandoned, an apple tree can live more than 200 years, and, like the Giving Tree in Shel Silverstein’s book, it will wait patiently for the boy to return. There is a bent old Black Oxford tree in Hallowell, Maine, that is approximately two centuries old and still gives a crop of midnight-purple apples each fall. In places like northern New England, the Appalachian Mountains, and Johnny Appleseed’s beloved Ohio River Valley — agricultural byways that have escaped the bulldozer — these centenarians hang on, flickering on the edge of existence, their identity often a mystery to the present home owners. And John Bunker is determined to save as many as he can before they, and he, are gone — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Hockey player dies after on-field snake bite

A Darwin hockey player has died after a snake bit him on the finger during an on-field training session.

Paramedics were called to the hockey complex in the suburb of Marrara on Tuesday night following reports that a player had fallen over and lost consciousness.

It is believed 26-year-old Karl Berry had picked up a snake off the playing surface of the field and thrown it into nearby bushes.

He did not notice he had been bitten and continued training — via redwolf.newsvine.com
