When is a Free WordPress Theme Really Free? Some Thoughts and Some Places to Find Them

Oh dear. Last week I appear to have scared a lot of people 🙁 I guess a modicum of scaring is a good thing as it makes people aware of the dangers and traps that it is easy to fall into. I was perhaps a little bit hyperbolic when I said anywhere else. I should have said Why you should never search for free WordPress Themes in Google or Any Other Search Engine — via WPMU.org

Why You Should Never Search For Free WordPress Themes in Google or Anywhere Else

A few months ago I wrote about WordPress Security. Now, armed only with the words free WordPress themes, builtBackwards‘ Theme Authenticity Checker Plugin and Donncha O Caoimh‘s Exploit Scanner, I’m going to take a look through the first page of Google to see just how safe pages ranking for Free WordPress Themes are — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Chilli fumes send four to hospital

The pungent smell of roasting chillies in an apartment building sent four people in the Finnish city of Espoo to the hospital on Monday with respiratory problems.

Rescue workers had to use gas masks to get up to the top floors where the smell was coming from, rescue services spokesman Mika Maekelae told AFP, saying the smokeless odour was akin to pepper spray.

The first rescue worker who entered the building had a bad coughing fit and trouble breathing, he added.

Inside the apartment, rescue workers found an oven full of burnt whole chillies, which the occupant had forgotten — via richardfarner.newsvine.com

Don’t trash an iPod with bad blocks on the drive

I had bad blocks on my iPod classic 120gb. I was told to trash it and by a certified technician but I wouldn’t give up. I tried reformating at least 50 times. My iPod would restore and show up in iTunes no problem but I couldn’t copy more than 2gb of data before iTunes would hang.

I also tried reformating the iPod with Disk Utility. I was able to format but not with zero out data selected (recommended for fixing bad blocks). I even tried changing the partition map through terminal but was unsuccessful — via Mac OS X Hints

Intelligence agencies go to supreme court over ruling on secret evidence

MI5 and MI6 will argue in a test case before the supreme court tomorrow that in future no intelligence gathered abroad, even if initially obtained through torture, should ever be disclosed in a British ourt.

Last year an appeal court dismissed what it described as an attempt to undermine a fundamental principle of common law: that a litigant must see and hear the evidence used against him or her.

Now the security and intelligence agencies are challenging that ruling in an unprecedented case. The Guardian, the Times, the BBC, and the human rights groups Liberty and Justice will argue before the country’s most senior judges that if the agencies get their way, the right to a fair trial will be eroded, while public confidence in decisions taken by the courts will be diminished — via redwolf.newsvine.com

CSS PNG Image Fix for IE

CSS PNG Image Fix for IE Nov 05 181 We’ve all seen them, the hoards of PNG fixes for IE6. That is because IE6 is a bag of smashed buttholes. I’m serious. It is. That is why we (web designers of the new world) have to continually come up with creative ways to solve the PNG issue. In case you are lost, just realize that in IE6, PNG images with transparency do not show their transparent regions, so you have to use some crazy IE6 proprietary filters. Pakistan begins assault on polio with jabs for 32 million children

Beset by war against violent extremists, Pakistan is now thrusting itself on to the frontline of a silent battle: the world’s final assault on polio.

Turbine-Free Wind Power

NY Times – Turbine-Free Wind Power from Antfood on Vimeo.

The wind panels are the brainchild of Francis Moon, a professor of mechanical engineering at Cornell University. He created a panel of 25 pads that oscillate in the wind, much the way leaves vibrate when a gust of air sifts through a tree. The pads attach to piezoelectric materials that produce electricity from each vibration — via The New York Times

Social Housing In Carabanchel / coco arquitectos

Outlying contexts surrounded by city border highways, fields, malls… require consistent answers. These are places where any action demands the same audacity, for example, a leaning building. The construction expresses with the language of kinetic, fitting its shape parallel to the slope while the ground floor retrieves the level of the plot defining streets — via ArchDaily
