Google fires back about search engine spam

The Google folks are taking issue over spam and the quality of Google searches which some have claimed has gone down in recent months.

Today on its official blogsite, the company’s Matt Cutts, Principal Engineer stated: January brought a spate of stories about Google’s search quality. Reading through some of these recent articles, you might ask whether our search quality has gotten worse. The short answer is that according to the evaluation metrics that we’ve refined over more than a decade, Google’s search quality is better than it has ever been in terms of relevance, freshness and comprehensiveness. Today, English-language spam in Google’s results is less than half what it was five years ago, and spam in most other languages is even lower than in English. However, we have seen a slight uptick of spam in recent months, and while we’ve already made progress, we have new efforts underway to continue to improve our search quality — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Hawaii Preparatory Science Building by Flansburgh Architects

Flansburgh Architects designed a new Science Building for Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

In this new 6,100 square foot renewable-energy research laboratory, students will study, design, and evaluate renewable-energy technologies. The award-winning facility meets the Living Building Challenge, a threshold that exceeds the USGBC’s Platinum LEED rating. It produces all of its own energy needs, harvests rainwater to meet its potable water needs, and provides natural ventilation and views to 100% of its occupied spaces. Sophisticated energy models were used to form the shape and fenestration of the building during the design — via CONTEMPORIST

Pequignet Moorea Triomphe Watches

Pequignet is also a true manufacture, and makes some of their own movements. For the rest they use Swiss-made ETA movements.

The Moorea Triumph collection has a number of pieces. The simple of which runs about $1,000, looks very Sinn/Bell & Ross in the dial, and has an ETA 2892 automatic movement. The collection have 44mm wide cases that have a variety of finishes and materials. The cases are also thin, with three-hand models being only about 10mm thick. Pequignet likes PVD black over steel, but there are also models in gold. Some of the bezels are more classic, and other looks to be highly Breitling inspired. The watches are pretty solid, and of course there is that interesting bracelet they have. The bracelet comes in at least two forms. One of large metal links with smaller joints, and others where the larger links are actually rubber — via A Blog to Read

The Mushroom Tunnel of Mittagong

As Geoff mentioned here on BLDGBLOG a few weeks ago, we spent our last full day in Australia touring the Li-Sun Exotic Mushroom Farm with its founder and owner, Dr Noel Arrold. Three weeks earlier, at a Sydney farmers’ market, we had been buying handfuls of his delicious Shimeji and Chestnut mushrooms to make a risotto, when the vendor told us that they’d all been grown in a disused railway tunnel southwest of the city, in Mittagong — via BLDGBLOG

Twitter Sued By Celebrity Network

Micro-blogging service Twitter is being sued by a company that claims it had already come up with the idea for an online network of celebrities.

One of Twitter’s biggest appeals is that it gives web users a chance to get inside the mind of their favourite celebrities by reading updates about their daily lives. Whether it’s musings from Demi Moore, Aston Kutcher and Stephen Fry, or the likes of Katie Price discussing her divorce.

However, according to VS Technologies, Twitter infringes on its patent, which was granted in 2002, for a method and system for creating an interactive virtual community of famous people — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Duke Nukem Forever to Finally Ship Year Before World Ends

Everyone knows the world ends in 2012, so why not send if off in style, kicking butt and chewing bubble gum? You do still chew bubble gum, don’t you?

That’s right, Duke Nukem Forever will finally be with us, for better or worse, on 3 May 2011 (6 May 2011 worldwide). Publisher 2K Games and pinch-developer Gearbox Software (Borderlands, Brothers in Arms) announced the date this morning. The presumably irreverent first-person shooter will ship simultaneously for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PCs — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Bultaco Cazarécords

In 1960, the young Spanish manufacturer Bultaco decided to make a name for itself and claim some long distance records. It built this stunningly beautiful 175cc machine, and took it to the Autodrome de Montlhéry just south of Paris. It was a successful trip, with five records in the bag. Best of all, the Bultaco Cazarécords is still in running order, and in the care of the remarkable Museu de la Moto de Bassella in Spain, a two-hour ride northwest of Barcelona — via Bike EXIF

La Cornette by YH2

Canadian architectural firm YH2 designed La Cornette, a country house in Quebec, Canada.

Built on the slope of a small hill, La Cornette is a country house open to the pastoral landscape that surrounds it. Under a soaring roof resembling a nun’s cornet wimple is a roomy dwelling modelled on traditional Quebec houses of old that lodged large families and their relatives. This house for celebrations and holidays, designed for two families, is set into the naturally uneven terrain in a way that brings each level into direct contact with the surrounding natural environment. It offers a resting place for all guests under its large gable in a series of bedrooms and unusual sleeping areas — via CONTEMPORIST

Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique in Platinum

This year the Swiss brand will issue a new take on the last year’s Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 ExoTourbillon Chronographe timepiece. The new Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique watch will feature almost the same case, but will be powered by a different movement.

The movement in question is the new hand-wound Manufacture Calibre MB M65.63.

Besides a beautifully executed tourbillon escapement that occupies the upper part of the dial (it is in fact the movement’s mainplate that serves as a dial), the M65.63’s main point of interest is the pair of cylindrical balance-springs — via World Watch Review
