Slum landlords demanded sex from international students

Rogue landlords in Marsfield in Sydney’s north west are piling as many as 20 students into shoddily converted family homes, demanding cash in hand and advance notice of visitors to avoid detection by authorities, international students say.

Some landlords are offering cut-price accommodation to female students in return for sex, while others have been the subject of a six-month investigation in relation to other crimes — via redwolf.newsvine.com

World’s Most Expensive Plinking Target – $99,000 Gold Cup

John Weber, a 70-year-old from England, was given a metal mug by his grandfather in 1945. Though his grandfather had a good eye for antiques, John never thought the metal mug was worth much. He played with it as a child, and even used it as a target for his air rifle. The mug, assumed to be brass, has languished in a shoe box under Weber’s bed for decades.

Well, it turns out Weber’s old mug may be the world’s most expensive plinking target! The cup is actually made of solid gold, and is a rare, ancient artwork, crafted over 2300 years ago. The unusual mug, decorated with twin, opposite-facing female heads, was appraised with a value exceeding one-quarter million dollars ($250,000) — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Squid and octopuses traumatized by low-frequency noise

Whales and dolphins aren’t the only marine creatures bothered by the increasing amount of undersea noise. The first study to detail the physical toll of low-frequency noise on cephalopods has revealed a surprising amount of trauma, according to a study published today in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Environment.

In four separate species, noise exposure resulted in significant permanent damage in the statocyst, the fluid-filled structure in a cephalopod’s head responsible for helping the animal determine its position and maintain balance. Hair cells and nerve fibres in the statocyst were missing or damaged within 12 hours of noise exposure. And, in the worst cases, large holes were present immediately in the sensory epithelium of the statocyst—and became more pronounced 96 hours after noise exposure. The noise impact was acute and immediate, yet worsened over time — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Margarido House / Onion Flats

This single family home [Onion Flats] in the hills of Oakland, CA, overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and all of San Francisco, is designed to merge comfortably into it’s difficult and steeply sloped site. It is also meant to provide a tranquil yet inspiring setting for a young couple, their two children and their aging in-laws. The physical site offered the project its greatest challenge and direction. It’s 17% slope coupled with height restrictions and adjacencies to neighboring homes required that the building be bunkered into the landscape. This became the source of the project’s programmatic, spatial and architectural strategy, which is centered around the entry or knuckle of the building — via ArchDaily

DariztDesign Honda GL100

If Yamaha’s SR series is the mainstay of affordable customization in the Western world, then Honda’s GL series is the Indonesian equivalent. This unusual bobber comes from DariztDesign, described by principal Agus Darizt as just a little shed—a home garage in Jogja (Yogjakarta), a city on the island of Java. Agus and his brother Faiz design, fabricate and paint their bikes in-house, and the green GL100 was the second bike they built. Indonesia has only a limited bike selection, Agus says, so I try to create something else, something different. Indeed: check the custom tube frame and that radical suspension. Agus and Faiz have now built seven bikes in a wide range of styles—including a very tasty Kawasaki KZ200—so check them out on the DariztDesign web site — via Bike EXIF

Inside CERT Australia

The Australian Government has a list of software holes that are so sensitive they’re kept hidden from the public. These weaknesses are being used by criminals to steal our money and our data. They may even be a cornerstone to planned attacks on critical infrastructure, like energy, water and transport. But in the murky battle between those that protect us and those who seek to harm, these vulnerabilities are also the bait with which cyber-criminals are caught — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Indonesia anti-porn MP quits for watching porn

A member of parliament from an Islamic party which promoted anti-pornography legislation has resigned after being caught watching porn in parliament.

Mr Arifinto of the Islamic Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) was photographed looking at the images on Friday.

He said he had inadvertently opened an email link which led him to the images.

Pornography has become one of the testing grounds of conservative Islam’s influence over politics in Indonesia.

For the recent developing media coverage, I apologise to all members of the party and parliament, Mr Arifinto – who goes by one name – told a news conference — via richardfarner.newsvine.com

Russian spy agency complains about Gmail, Skype

Russia’s domestic security service called for access to encrypted communication providers like Gmail, Hotmail and Skype on Friday, saying the uncontrolled use of such services could threaten national security.

The proposal by the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB secret police raised concerns some senior Russian officials would like to limit Internet access to stave off any potential protests ahead of the 2012 presidential election — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Fire, brimstone & the blackboard

Department official Christine Pinto informed Mr Heasley that they were obligated to offer the classes, if approached by an accredited instructor, and that they were forbidden from scheduling alternate classes for students not taking part.

While this seems somewhat wasteful – students not taking part in SRI classes are described in the VCAT complaint launched by Heasley and fellow parents at Hawthorn West as being given free time, which involves playing with Lego, drawing and reading – I’m more worried about the fact that schools are forced to offer these classes if approached by accredited organisations. I hold concerns about the group responsible for 96 per cent of all SRI classes offered. Furthermore, I’m worried about how little training representatives of this group require to be allowed in front of children — via redwolf.newsvine.com
