UK school cracks down on bad manners

Almost half the students at a British school have been barred from class in just four days because of infractions of their new code of conduct.

The 600 or so scofflaws at the City of Ely Community College in Cambridgeshire, southeastern England, have been sentenced to spend five hours sitting silently in rows in the assembly hall while reading a booklet explaining good behaviour.

The rules they flouted included prohibitions on chewing gum, wearing odd socks, eating between lessons, running, wearing excessive makeup or using visible earphones or cellphones.

The zero-tolerance policy was introduced this week by Catherine Jenkinson-Dix, the school’s no-nonsense principal, in consultation with teachers.

On Monday alone, 236 of the college’s 1,295 students were sent to the hall — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Ducati 750 Imola Replica

Perhaps the most famous racing Ducati of all time is the 750 that took Englishman Paul Smart to victory in the 1972 Imola 200 race. And with a machine as iconic as that, you’re going to get people wanting to copy it. One such man is German Hajo Barth, and to make life easier, the starting point was his SportClassic Paul Smart 1000. Ducati already did a pretty good job in emulating the original Paul Smart bike, but Barth wanted something even closer—not only in looks, but also performance. So he took his bike to the dealer Ducati Rhein-Sieg in Waldbröl, and they set to work — via Biek EXIF

Poop Reveals Immigrant Wolf on Isolated Island

The wolves of Isle Royale in Lake Superior have been studied by scientists for more than 50 years, but they’re still learning new tricks. The scientists discovered a new immigrant in the population by analyzing the genes in its poop.

The scientists, John Vucetich and Rolf Peterson, of Michigan Technological University, long thought that the wolves were an isolated group, because no other wolves could make it onto the island, located in Lake Superior. The wolf, called The Old Gray Guy crossed an ice bridge onto the island in 1997.

Before this discovery, the Isle Royale wolf population had been considered completely isolated since it was founded in the late 1940s, Vucetich said in a statement — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Moto Guzzi Daytona Cafe Racer

The 4-valve Guzzi motor has to be one of the most imposing powerplants of all time. And Jasper Mulder, a marine contractor currently working in Nigeria, was so smitten he chose his 1993 Moto Guzzi Daytona on the strength of that motor alone — via Bike EXIF

Son Of A Gun BSA

Larry Houghton of Lamb Engineering in the UK keeps a low profile on the custom motorcycle scene. But he’s got an unerring eye when it comes to building show winners: his latest creation took the top trophy at Custom Chrome’s recent European Bike Show. ‘Son Of A Gun’ is based on a BSA Gold Star, although there’s little left of the original. The engine is a 1951 ZB-model single—which makes it 499cc, I’m assuming—and according to Larry, it’s an ex-racing engine. (Which makes sense, because BSA offered different compression ratios and camshafts to cater for the sporting fraternity.) The gearbox is thought to be from a BSA M20 military motorcycle, and that’s where the vintage authenticity ends — via Bike EXIF

US to fund $20m remake of Sesame Street for Pakistan

The United States is funding a Pakistani remake of the popular TV children’s show Sesame Street.

In a new effort to win hearts and minds in Pakistan, USAID – the development arm of the US government – is donating $20m (£12m) to the country to create a local Urdu version of the show.

The project aims to boost education in Pakistan, where many children have no access to regular schooling.

The show is to be filmed in Lahore and aired later in the year — via richardfarner.newsvine.com

Google, DOJ sign deal to approve ITA acquisition

Google has won regulatory approval for its $700 million deal to buy ITA Software, but the Justice Department intends to keep a close eye on the search giant.

The proposed settlement, which still must be approved by a federal judge, requires Google to continue licensing ITA’s travel technology to rivals for five years on reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms. Some of those rivals, such as Kayak and Hotwire, formed FairSearch.org to oppose the deal — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Gnome et Rhône

Gnome et Rhône is a familiar name in vintage aviation circles. But few people know that the French company also built motorcycles, from 1920 until the early 1950s. This lovely machine is one of around 3,000 manufactured under license from the British firm ABC Motorcycles—a company closely aligned with Sopwith, another aircraft manufacturer. In those days, aviation and motorcycling were commonly linked, and this particular connection was brokered by a pilot: André Barthélémy, the official Parisian distributor of ABC — via Bike EXIF

Applepus by Meg Lyman

A very fun tattoo commission for Amy. Her little guy apparently calls them applepus instead of octopus, which is adorable and also the reason for the toy.

I used a more impasto application of gouache than usual, and it was both challenging and educational. The stuff is really easy to blend wet in wet, but once it dries, lifting becomes a problem. It’s a delicate balancing act between having enough paint mixed up and keeping that paint wet while you work with other colors — via CrashOctopus Blog

Maine legalizing switchblades for one-armed people

Maine lawmakers on Wednesday approved legalizing switchblades for people with one arm, moving close to becoming the first state to make such an exception to laws that ban use of the spring-action knives.

Backers of the measure say legalizing switchblades would eliminate a need for one-armed people to be forced to open folding knives with their teeth in emergencies — via redwolf.newsvine.com
