Silent Treatment: Mimes Enforce Traffic Laws in Venezuela

A sort of silent shame has cropped up in South American cities, as officials plead with both drivers and pedestrians to obey traffic laws by using the antics of hired mimes.

And why not? Nearly everyone looks at a mime, especially when dressed in a brightly coloured getup while eagerly making fun of people on the side of a busy street. The latest effort has about 120 mimes on the downtown streets of Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, making a (silent) scene any time a driver or pedestrian disobeys a traffic rule — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Alarm at private police operating beyond the law

Hundreds of privately contracted police officers are working for forces across the country despite being unaccountable to the watchdog responsible for investigating deaths in custody, public complaints and allegations of wrongdoing, an investigation by The Independent has found.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has no automatic power to discipline privately contracted staff even if individual failures or misconduct contribute to the death or serious injury of a detainee — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Mother sues banks over son’s eBay scam

A woman is suing Australia’s big four banks for their alleged role in a $200,000 money laundering scam masterminded by her teenage son.

The woman, from the NSW south coast, has launched an action in the Supreme Court seeking damages and wants an apology from the Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac and NAB for unconscionable conduct after they allegedly handed her son dozens of bank accounts and debit cards without reasonable scrutiny.

In 2007, the then 14-year-old was selling fictitious products on eBay and, at one stage, earning more than $6000 a day — via redwolf.newsvine.com

3D Printing Community to Crowdsource Saving a Species

Where does 3D printing and species protection intersect? Hermit crabs, apparently. Makerbot Industries, who make do-it-yourself 3D printers, launched Project Shellter last Tuesday. Project Shellter intends to leverage the Makerbot community’s design talent and network of 5,000 3D printers to design and produce shells for hermit crabs who face a species threatening, man-made housing shortage. Hmm, sounds familiar.

Bre Pettis, a founder of Makerbot, explains on the Makerbot blog:

Hermit crabs don’t make their own shells. They scavenge their homes. And now, hermit crabs are facing a housing shortage as the worldwide shell supply is decreasing. With a shell shortage, hermit crabs around the world are being forced to stick their butts into bottles, shotgun shells, and anything else they can find. This is not acceptable. As a community, we can reach out to this vulnerable species and offer our digital design skills and 3D printing capabilities and give hermit crabs another option: 3D printed shells

Teen caught out lying about abduction

A 13-year-old girl has lied to police about being abducted and undressed by two men on the NSW north coast.

Police appealed for calm in the Coffs Harbour area after it emerged the girl gave false information to police about the incident, which she said happened at 8.00am on Friday.

The teenager told police she was walking along a bush track when two men grabbed her and started to undress her.

She said an unknown man had intervened, allowing her to run away.

Police on Monday said a major investigation had been launched after the report, but it emerged the girl had not been telling the truth — via redwolf.newsvine.com

R Lee Ermey learns to knit

Just got back from Washington, DC and on the plane to Burbank I sat next to a nice fellow who took an interest in my knitting. It took me two glasses of wine and about sixteen people gasping and asking the man for his autograph before it dawned on me he might be Someone. I did not know he was Someone, I just thought he was quite a character with his red boots and his salty language. He loved my knitting and he thought it would he high-larious for an ex-Marine such as himself to take up knitting as a hobby, proving once again that yarn unites everyone — via CrazyAuntPurl

Records TB / BRM

After four years of research, development and testing, Bernard Richards and his team at Bernard Richards Manufacture have unveiled an extraordinary looking timepiece — the BRM Records-TB (or TB-10000 Tours as stated on the BRM web site).

The basic idea with the Records TB watch is that when placed flat on your arm, the dial and hands are readily visible with no need to rotate your wrist (let go of the wheel, etc.). The watch features a titanium and carbon fibre case (measuring roughly 44mm x 25mm) that looks like a dashboard instrument — via Perpetuelle.com Watch Blog

Skycourt House / Keiji Ashizawa Design

Skycourt is an ambitious renovation project [Keiji Ashizawa Design] that involved transforming a Japan bubble era house into a modern home connected to the city and the sunlight. The house is located in a quiet residential area, a couple of blocks away from Tokyo’s business district. The original house plan was a dated two storey house with cramped bedrooms, small windows with no indoor/outdoor flow.

The clients, a working couple with two children, wanted to maximise the living space, create a backyard with privacy and develop a structure flooded with light. As the original house was part of a set of twin houses, the clients also wanted to decorate the facade in order to severe the link with the sibling. These requirements demanded bold renovations.
