White Rhino / Zoo Parc de Beauval

Something wonderful happened at France’s Zoo Parc de Beauval in the middle of the night on Sunday, 16 October… a White Rhino was born. The baby, a male, weighed about 176 pounds (80 kg) and the report is that he and Satara, his mother, are doing well — so well in fact that he is already on view through a huge window in the Rhino house — via ZooBorns

Moroccan Bow Lathe

Stuart King shot this video of a talented woodworker in the streets of Marrakech using a bow lathe to turn out a chess piece. This simple hand-powered tool, in the right hands (and in this case feet), can produce intricately carved items in a matter of minutes. The show of skill and dexterity is truly mesmerising — via MAKE

Climate scientists slam George Pell’s utter rubbish claims

Leading climate change researchers have launched a scathing attack on a speech delivered this week by Cardinal George Pell, describing it as dreadful, utter rubbish and flawed.

The Archbishop of Sydney Cardinal Pell, Australia’s most senior Catholic, is a long-time denier of the risks posed by human-caused climate change.

But he has taken his climate confusion right to the heart of England’s Catholic church, with a speech (you can read the whole thing here) delivered at Westminster’s Cathedral Hall — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Man severed own arm with guillotine

Police in the US say a man who walked into a medical clinic with his right arm severed has indicated he cut his own limb off with a homemade guillotine.

Manta Ray / Prometheus

I’ve had my eye on Prometheus for a while now and it looks like they’ve hit on a winner. The Manta Ray is a 1000M diver that looks like a tank and has the styling of a un-oranged Doxa. It has an ETA automatic movement and gas release.

The price is almost right. It’s $900 for a three-hander so I’m a little cautious but for that price you get a 316L stainless steel case and heavy-duty bracelet. It has a 44mm face and unidirectional bezel — via Wrist Watch Review

Gene therapy used in a bid to save a man’s sight

Researchers in Oxford have treated a man with an advanced gene therapy technique to prevent him from losing his sight.

It is the first time that anyone has tried to correct a genetic defect in the light-sensing cells that line the back of the eye.

The president of the Academy of Medical Sciences said the widespread use of gene therapy of this treatment will be soon be possible — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Rob Ford denies calling 911 dispatcher names

Ford’s comments concern 911 calls he made Monday after Mary Walsh, part of the CBC-TV comedy show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, ambushed him in his driveway as the character Marg Delahunty, with cameras rolling.

First they said they weren’t on my property. They were at my car, they were holding me. My daughter was just inside the door. You know, put yourself in my shoes, Ford said.

The mayor was responding to a CBC News report that quoted multiple sources who claimed Ford turned on the dispatcher who took one of the calls and said: You … bitches! Don’t you fucking know? I’m Rob fucking Ford, the mayor of this city! — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Two-year-old Superhero Saves Mom’s Life

Lia Vega is only 2, but her mother is calling her a superhero. The little girl made a phone call Thursday that saved her mother’s life.

Lia was at her grandmother’s house in Houston with her mother, Larissa Taylor, and her baby sister when Taylor blacked out and collapsed, according to Houston affiliate KTRK-TV. Lia picked up her mother’s phone and called her grandmother, Bobbie Gonzalez, for help.

She said, ‘My mom fell down,’ Gonzalez told KTRK. I said, ‘Let me talk to your mom.’ And she said, ‘She won’t wake up.’

I never taught her how to use the phone, so I have no idea how she picked it up. I assume just by watching us, Taylor said — via redwolf.newsvine.com

How Were You Born?

I see a lot interesting Street Art Posters around Sydney and appreciate their ability to make me smile. This is a design concept I came up with revolving around the theme How Were You Born?. The answers are of course song titles and the matching images are the singers — via DesignedbyNatalie

Ceramic Yarn Bowl / Christine Tenenholtz

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love a good container. These yarn holding bowls from Arizona artist Christine Tenenholtz have a decidedly high end feel, yet they’re clearly made to be used, and used often. I always get excited when an artist creates something that is equal parts functional object and art piece, and these yarn bowls are a particularly beautiful example of where those two ideas meet.

1978 Honda CX500 / Dave Mucci

It was a 1978 CX500 Standard from a guy in Michigan. I bought it in running order, but immediately tore it down. Mucci started sketching concepts on his blog: I wanted it to be two-up, a relatively inexpensive build, and not toopretty. Minister declares logging protects koalas

The New South Wales Environment Minister has been ridiculed by the Opposition after telling a budget estimates hearing that logging protects koalas.

Robyn Parker was being questioned at the NSW Parliament over the State Government’s election commitment to protect threatened species, including koalas.

Labor MP Luke Foley asked Ms Parker how the promise could fit with a decision to allow logging in important koala habitats at Bermagui and in the Boambee State Forest, in the state’s south and mid-north coast — via redwolf.newsvine.com

US wants to give pharma more power over our medicines policy

Leaked documents from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement negotiations currently underway in Peru show the US is seeking to use the agreement to increase the monopoly rights of pharmaceutical companies and undermine the effectiveness of pharmaceutical reimbursement programs like Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

The TPP is a proposed regional trade agreement involving Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam.

The texts, leaked over the weekend, include an annex on ‘transparency and procedural fairness for healthcare technologies’ and extra provisions for an intellectual property rights chapter that was leaked in February this year — via redwolf.newsvine.com

RAF makes Great Escape, the sequel

A group of Scots RAF officers have recreated one of history’s most famous breakouts which was immortalised by film star Steve McQueen in The Great Escape.

Flight Lieutenant Mikey Robertson, who grew up in Stirlingshire, was one of six officers selected to travel to Stalag Luft III PoW camp and re-enact the escape of allied prisoners during the Second World War.

The team used records and artefacts for reference and were guided by original prisoners of war in the new escape attempt in the ruins of the German camp — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Are Gut Bacteria In Charge?

The bacteria in our gut may be controlling our lives more than we ever realised.

In the latest findings, published today in Nature, a link between gut bacteria and the development of multiple sclerosis in mice was shown. Studies have also examined gut bacteria in relation to obesity, depression and much more.

More human studies are emerging hinting at the role the bacteria in our guts may play well beyond helping us to digest our food — via redwolf.newsvine.com
