Homemade Knitting Machine

Youtube user correx37 made this homemade knitting machine using old printer parts, two servos and a Picaxe-18x microcontroller. I love the simplicity and re-use of components. That slow, deliberate action could easily lull me in to a deep sleep… and when I woke up, I’d have a freshly-made scarf — via MAKE

Yes, AIA San Diego, there is a Santa Claus. And he’s hired an architect!

Twas 1975, and the Claus family needed a workshop designed. Enter Don Reeves, an Emeritus member of AIA San Diego, who may have been almost 40 at the time but, deep down, he was a kid at heart with a twinkle in his eye. Don figured that the best kind of client is jolly, generous, and also has an appreciation for good design and craftsmanship. Someone like, well, Santa Claus!

The kind of person who absolutely loves the Christmas season and spirit, Don said to his staff, Rather than send out some nice architectural drawing for our holiday greeting to business friends and family, let’s do a working drawing of Santa’s workshop! Take the next 45 minutes or so, and have at it! Well, four days later, a sticker board was prominently featured in the office, and it became very clear that they’d done it – designed a terrific workshop for Mr and Mrs S Claus. With an Elves Bunkroom, Reindeer Port, and Mail Room (for processing letters to Santa), the workshop is truly functional [PDF] — via redwolf.newsvine.com

After the Voice published its series this spring on the city’s 10 worst landlords, which included some religious Jews, Rabbi Jill Jacobs tackled the topic, writing a column titled When the Slumlords Are Us for the Forward. This was already a familiar subject for the Conservative rabbi and activist — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Float Table

Float Table

The Float Table from RockPaperRobot is comprised of 64 blocks of wood, which appear to be floating independently of one another. They actually are, for the most part. A bit of steel cabling runs between them all, but they are primarily held in place by magnetic force. This make the table sturdy, yet capricious. For the $2,000 asking price, this conversation piece had better start some really good discussions — via technabob
