New Releases from Mozilla

Mozilla 1.5 has been released, this is supposed to be the last version of the old Mozilla suite. Mozilla Firebird 0.7, the stand-alone browser by mozilla.org and Thunderbird 0.3, the stand-alone version of the Mozilla mail-program also have shiny new versions. The new browser release included a bug fix for a long standing <hr> bug that promptly rendered all of the workaround <hr> code in the site invisible. The CSS has been fixed to reflect the changes

Little Frog Heads

Several years back Cadbury brought out Tiny Freddos, miniature chocolate frogs that arrived in a good sized bag of individually foiled wrapped goodness. After addicting me to their wonderful product, Cadbury pulled it with no explanation, leaving me bereft of Tiny Freddos.
Yesterday I found a bag of snack size bags — packaging overload — full of tiny Freddo heads. A goodly amount of frog heads in each little bag, sized just right for a melt in the mouth treat and lovingly designed to be shoved up the nose of the annoying sibling who is trying to steal your frog bits.
Hopefully Tiny Freddo Heads will have a longer production run than the Tiny Freddos and keep me in chocolate frog heaven for years to come.

Simpsons = Bad, Writhing Sluts = Good?

Here’s something that makes no sense to me, my aunt won’t let her 14 year old son watch the Simpsons but she’s taking him to see Christina Aguilera? Surely you get more good quality, humorous, entertainment from the Simpsons instead of watching Madame Aguilera writhing around while miming?

What’s with this cruel and unusual punishment?

Love Will Kill Us All

Warren Ellis is in a very expansive mood this week and has written a piece reminiscent of a line from The Outlaw Josey Wales; ‘Well he ain’t a hard man to follow. Leaves dead men wherever he goes.’:

I remember you all.

Nicola Jane in Hyde Park summer, all in white, long blonde mane and pale blue eyes, every inch reflecting light, laughing at me dressed all in black. We didn’t look right together, but we were. Waiting for you at night outside the stage door. I think that’s when I started living at night. You got brighter and I got darker.

The world got darker.

Guitars clanging like fire alarms inside the club as Tara B and I clung to each other in the back doorway, the night no bigger than me and she. My hand on her dancer’s thigh in the dark, all wrapped in nylon. Her eyes on me as she sang in working-men’s clubs. Bending her over the dressing-room table while they were still applauding in the bar. Running my fingertips over the scars on her wrists at five in the morning.

Alice the taxi driver gasping as I licked her tattoo, the first time anyone had done that. The menagerie of rats in her tiny room watching from their cages as she arched and spasmed against my lips.

Darker and darker. Time passing in a million little breaths.

I remember you all, I really do. I remember Ann-Marie’s dirtily infectious giggle as I went down on my knees in front of her and told her it was her turn to be sucked off. I remember Jenny’s wild pealing laughter as I got down on my knees at the taxi rank and asked her to marry me, to mad cheering from the bar full of people behind us.

The same taxi rank I met Alice at. Love makes you stupid. Love kills us all.

They found Alice in the back of her taxi not long after. I had a friend in the police service who said the look on her face was one of total surprise.

After a while, it was like I never saw the sun at all.

Tara B, floating in the canal like a junkyard Ophelia, burger boxes and used condoms drifting around her. Nicola Jane, slumped outside the stage door, hands over her crimson heart like she was trying to stop it breaking.

I went west, chased by permanent night. Porcelain Larissa in New York hotel rooms. Sex was a psychedelic for her. It took her places no-one else ever saw. Convulsing like an electroshock patient as I held her throat with one hand and spanked her with the other. She’d say “thank you” after each apocalyptic sequence of orgasms, looking up at me with complete devotion. Hotels would complain about the screaming.

I think perhaps they were relieved when the screaming stopped, and I sat there alone again, with night coming hard.

I ran from it. For a while, there was sun on my skin in San Francisco. And at night there was Augusta, still in her leather corset and black Victorian cape, taking control of me, telling me it would be like this forever.

But it wasn’t. The one thing I have learned in all this time is that nothing is forever. Everybody leaves.

Larissa left me in a ghetto park. From a little distance, it looked like she was wearing a red choker, and that her hands were tied by red ribbons.

People called me vain because the first thing I always bought for every new home was a mirror. But it was only so I could see another face when the night got too dark for everyone else to stand.

And here I lay now, in a country whose name I don’t even know, and night is falling, my darlings. Night is falling and I can’t run away this time.

I remember you all. And I lay here dying now. I can see it coming, feel the shape of it. All my strength is falling from me like October leaves. I have in me just enough to be able to hold your hands.

But none of you are here.

Copy Paper Ain’t Copy Paper

There is a difference in the quality of copy papers from different companies. I know this, I learned from the experience of being the bunny who always had to remove the jammed — and quite often mauled and mangled — poor quality paper from various laser printers and photocopiers over the years.

This doesn’t explain why, on needing to purchase more paper recently, my brain turned off and suddenly decided that the unknown element of ‘Artrite Office’ copy paper would be a good idea. Needless to say I regretted the decision and have since had the offending section of my brain surgically removed. Continual jams caused by an origami quirk that produced lovely concertina folds, but no actual prints.

I’m back with my regular Reflex paper and happily in the land of print once more.

Who Needs Graphic Artists?

The Page Design Genie.

According to this article Xerox is currently developing:

…automated document design software that takes the text, graphics, and other elements that might be parts of a complex document and flows them iteratively into example page layouts.

Users can define rules such as corporate colours, logos etc, and the software will come up with what IT perceives as the best designs.

So some software could be making design choices in the near future. I don’t like the idea of software essentially telling people that good design can only be achieved by following certain formulas. I can just see it now. Bigbad Co has fired their graphics department leaving it all up to the most junior person in the company and this software. This person is now dubbed the whatever-they-are-AND-graphics-guy. (His first task might be to design himself some new business cards – possibly.) Guy inputs photos, text and diagrams and lets the software do it’s magic. He presents 3 designs to Bigbad Co. I can see a couple of different scenarios here. a) Bigbad Co loves ’em all because a computer can’t be wrong, or b) Bigbad Co asks for a gazillion changes and ends up spending hours hitting the “design it” button until they get the design “they” think is right.

On the other hand it could turn out to be a valuable time saver for when you want to see a certain design applied to say different page sizes or orientation.

Xerox are also looking at developing it for other media such as web and PDA.

SETI@Home Client to be Open to Other Projects

SETI@home is preparing to make a major change to their client and backend. The new system ‘boinc‘ will be a general purpose client and accept work units from other projects (selected by the user). This will open-up SETI@Home’s millions strong user base to academic projects that cannot afford supercomputers. As boinc is an open source framework other distributed projects will also be able to use it giving boinc a larger installed base than SETI@Home

MT Plugins

A couple more MT plugins from the prolific Brad Choate have been added to the system.

First is Sanitise, which allows unwanted HTML to be stripped from comment displays. This was due to a problem caused by a closing tag being cropped by the recent comments section and the entire index page turning an attractive shade of italic. The problem on the index page is fixed and the comment italics are still visible in their original location. Very useful.

The second plugin is Supplemental Category Tags, which provides a handy previous and next navigation linkage for the category archives.

Also added Kevin Shay‘s FirstNWords, a helpful plugin for setting excerpts to a nominated number of words rather than characters.

Now all I need is functionality for author archives to be added and I’ll be a happy camper.
