Groups Ask Appeals Court To Restore Wolf Protections

Conservation groups asked an appeals court on Monday to strike down a move by Congress to strip more than 1,500 wolves in Idaho and Montana of federal endangered species protections.

In a petition to the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the groups sought to overturn a ruling last week by a federal judge that found Congress did not exceed its authority in April when it allowed a measure removing wolves from the endangered species list in Idaho and Montana.

That ruling, by U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy, came days after Idaho announced plans to cut its wolf population from about 1,000 to no fewer than 150 by extensive hunting and trapping and less than a month after Montana set a wolf hunting quota of 220 out of a population of 566 — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Our brains aren’t built to understand altitude

Animal brains, ours included, have evolved to be powerfully aware of where we are at any given moment. But it turns out that our brains are surprisingly, frustratingly two-dimensional, and that we’re only dimly aware of changes in altitude.

That’s the finding of new research from University College London. The team studied specific brain cells as rats moved through space: grid cells, which are used to measure distance, and place cells, which are used to understand location. When the rats moved upwards in altitude on little spiral staircases and climbing walls, the researchers found that the grid cells didn’t respond at all, and the place cells only barely registered. This indicates that animal brains simply do not have the complexity to handle full three-dimensional awareness, and so we shortchange our knowledge of height in order to better navigate horizontally — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Greyfriars Bobby tale is wrong claims Cardiff historian

For around a 150 years, tourists to Edinburgh have taken time out of their trip to visit the bronze statue of Greyfriars Bobby, the Skye Terrier reputed to have kept a 14 year vigil at his master’s graveside.

But now a historian at Cardiff University believes he has uncovered evidence that the legend is nothing but a shaggy dog tale — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Milton Police Find Shark In Woods

The shark was found discarded here on some private property just off of Rural Tenerriffe Road, not far from busy Route 125 and the Spaulding Turnpike.

I can only think that either someone didn’t have a license, because you have to have a license to fish the ocean, and was going to bring it home and someone said, ‘Hey dude, you need a license or something like that.’ Panicking, they probably said, ‘Well, I guess we’ve got to get rid of the evidence,’ said Ellis.

There is a local pond in Milton, NH, but the nearest salt water is nearly an hour away, and local residents are surprised — via redwolf.newsvine.com

African crested rat uses poison trick to foil predators

A species of rat has evolved an ingenious method to foil any predators that try to eat it, scientists report.

They found that the African crested rat chews the roots and bark of a highly toxic tree, and then smears the lethal mixture on its specially adapted fur.

Any animals that attack receive a mouthful of potentially deadly poison.

It is the first time that this behaviour has been reported in a mammal, the researchers write in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Giant fungus discovered in China

The most massive fruiting body of any fungus yet documented has been discovered growing on the underside of a tree in China.

The fruiting body, which is equivalent to the mushrooms produced by other fungi species, is up to 10m long, 80cm wide and weighs half a tonne.

That shatters the record held previously by a fungus growing in Kew Gardens in the UK.

The new giant fungus is thought to be at least 20 years old — via redwolf.newsvine.com

$3m benefactor Frank Samways is a dog’s – and the Lost Dogs Home’s – best friend

A big-hearted businessman has left Melbourne’s Lost Dogs Home $3 million — the largest bequest in its 100-year history.

Staff at the animal shelter described the donor, Frank Samways, as a man so empathetic for abandoned pets that he wouldn’t enter the animal shelter in Gracie Street, North Melbourne.

The home’s managing director, Graeme Smith, said Mr Samways, a charming, charismatic person, used to attend donor functions in the home’s courtyard. But [he] never set foot inside the shelter because he thought it would be too disturbing for him. He didn’t want to see any dog or cat incarcerated — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Blind Dog Rescue Alliance gives vision-impaired dogs a second chance

His name was Rocky, and he was a real-life underdog.

The 8-week-old Siberian Husky-mix puppy was a stray found in a remote section of western Canada, with nothing in his belly but worms on rocks, Brier Cadden wrote in a 7 February 2010, email. No one wanted to touch him because they didn’t like what his eyes looked like.

Rocky had an eye condition and was almost blind.

Cadden, now 33, sent the e-mail to the Philadelphia-based Blind Dog Rescue Alliance, which she found by searching Google.

What followed was a remarkable transcontinental journey for the puppy. He was flown from the town of Smithers in northwestern British Columbia to Vancouver, then driven to Seattle. From there, he rode with a truck driver to Wisconsin, where he spent a night. He then spent a week being fostered in Michigan before travelling to Philadelphia to stay with Karen Belfi, president of the alliance. He was eventually adopted by a woman in Somerdale, NJ — via redwolf.newsvine.com
