Three healthy Pallas’ Cat kittens (two males and one female) were born on 8 June 2011 at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden following a laparoscopic oviductal artificial insemination (AI) procedure conducted by scientists from the Cincinnati Zoo’s Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW).  This pregnancy and birth are the first ever in Pallas’ Cats from artificial insemination — via ZooBorns

Live animal export outrage: horrendous slaughter of cattle

The RSPCA and Animals Australia have released new footage they say shows the horrendous slaughter of cattle in Turkey.

The latest video, screened at a press conference in Canberra this morning, came as two separate bids to end the live animal export trade failed to win the support of a single government or opposition MP — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Call to grant property rights to animals

Giving animals legal ownership of their habitat and affording them standing before the courts may hold the key to protecting biodiversity, an Australian researcher says.

Australia is one of only 17 countries recognised as being mega-diverse, but it also has one of the highest extinction rates, with around 126 species of plants and animals sent to extinction in the past 200 years — via redwolf.newsvine.com

New Pacific eel is a living fossil, scientists say

A new type of eel that inhabits an undersea cave in the Pacific Ocean has been dubbed a living fossil because of its primitive features.

It is so distinct, scientists created a new taxonomic family to describe its relationship to other eels.

The US-Palauan-Japanese team say the eel’s features suggest it has a long and independent evolutionary history stretching back 200m years.

Details appear in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Sand Kitten / Safari

After 63 days of gestation, a rare Sand Cat Kitten was born at Israel’s Zoological Centre Tel Aviv Ramat Gan – Safari. Once plentiful in numbers in the dunes of Israel, the Sand Cat has become extinct in the region. This is Safari Zoo’s first successful Sand Cat birth and it is hoped this kitten will join Israel’s Sand Cat Breeding Program in order to help reintroduce the species into the wild — via ZooBorns

Dog school proves its worth

I glanced in the rearview mirror just in time to realize a distracted driver in a pickup truck was barrelling down the hill behind me. I braced for impact.

The dramatic sounds of metal twisting and glass shattering shook me, but I was more stunned than hurt. My dog, Bailey, and I had been on our way to the park, to practice the commands he had recently mastered in beginning obedience class: sit, stay, and heel.

It took me a few minutes to realize that Bailey, who had been riding in the back of my station wagon, had jumped through the broken back window and run off into the woods, trailing his leash — via redwolf.newsvine.com
