Cheetah Cubs / Colchester Zoo

Three Cheetah cubs were born to female, Uria and male, Jack in July at the UK’s Colchester Zoo. Male Cheetah, Jack, joined the Colchester Zoo’s collection in March 2011 to pair with Colchester’s resident female Uria on a recommendation from the EEP breeding co-ordinator for this species, which has resulted in a successful mating and birth of three healthy cubs — via ZooBorns

Deadly pigeon virus pops up in Victoria

Federal authorities have begun quarantining properties in Victoria amid fears a deadly pigeon virus could spread to other birds.

The Agriculture Department is monitoring an outbreak of the avian paramyxo virus, which has been detected for the first time in Australia, among pigeons.

The virus has already started killing some hobby birds, and threatens to spread to Victoria’s chicken population — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Silver fox import plan condemned

Animal shelters will be placed under further pressure if the importation of silver foxes as an exotic domestic pet is permitted, the RSPCA has warned.

There are more than 30 million feral red foxes in Australia and the RSPCA has joined a chorus of criticism of an application to the federal government to import silver foxes.

The rationale for importing the silver fox to Australia is simple: a new sort of unique pet. Foxes can have all the friendliness of a dog with the independence of a cat. Like a dog is not a wolf, the silver fox is not a wild fox, though they are the same species, the application from an unnamed person in NSW says — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Sand lizards bred at Chester Zoo return to Ynyslas

A group of sand lizards — one of Britain’s rarest reptiles — are being released back into the wild.

Once commonly found on dunes and heathland, the reptiles became endangered after the gradual destruction of their habitats.

But 46 lizards, reared at Chester Zoo, will soon be returned to their native habitats in Ynyslas, near Aberystwyth.

The zoo said they had become extinct in Wales 60 years ago — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Giant Anteater Baby / Atris Zoo

Late Friday night, Amsterdam’s Atris Zoo welcomed its third baby Giant Anteater. The delivery took a little over an hour, after which the baby climbed on the back of its mother, where it will spend the better part of its first year of anteater life. The young are almost invisible to predators on their mothers’ backs, as the stripes of mother and baby naturally blend together.

Giant Anteaters have a remarkably long snout, a 60 inch tongue and long claws on the forelegs. The gestation period of the great anteater is about six months — via ZooBorns

Snow Leopard Cubs / Twycross Zoo

A pouncing pair of Snow Leopard cubs recently appeared on the scene in their main enclosure at the Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire, England. And they’ve just gotten a check up by the vets! Born in June, they are yet to be named.

Parents Suou and Irma arrived at Twycross in May 2010 as part of the international breeding program. The birth of the cubs is a significant contribution to the conservation of Snow Leopards which are currently listed as endangered — via ZooBorns
