Well, didn’t Malcolm Turnbull hit the nail right on the head with his description of the deficit of trust
in Australian politics.
Not just because he because he was interpreted as having taken a swipe — multiple swipes, actually — at the man who supplanted him as leader of the federal Opposition. The media reports left the clear impression that when Turnbull said “trust deficit” he actually meant Tony Abbott
.
Actually, what he was criticising was something broader. It was the devolution of the whole political process. It was a very thought-provoking speech.
But, here’s the interesting thing. The examples he cited to show the lack of civility and honesty in political discourse overwhelmingly related to the behaviour of the political right.
Let’s get the Abbott stuff out of the way first, because the immediate focus of reportage of Turnbull’s September 5 George Winterton lecture at the University of Western Australia was, of course, how his words reflected the tension between the man the Liberal Party wants to lead it — Abbott — and the man most Australians want to lead it, Turnbull.

A painting bought at a flea market in the US may turn out to be a rare bargain — a work by French master Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
It was bought by a woman as part of a box lot that included a doll and a plastic cow, and cost about $50.
She took it to a Virginia auction house where experts said they believed it was Renoir’s Paysage Bords de Seine — a river scene — from about 1879.

A Taronga Zoo keeper is caring for two Ringtail Possum joeys that arrived at the Zoo via the Taronga Wildlife Hospital. Although they’re about the same age, the little boy is much more fragile than the little female, which was found separately. The male joey was found in a nature strip and it’s thought that after many hours of being unable to feed from his deceased mother the youngster ventured out of the pouch looking for food. Lucky for him a Good Samaritan saw the joey and brought him into Taronga’s care. Taronga officials reminded the Australian public, With spring almost here there will be lots of young about, so if you see a dead possum please check its pouch

Google has just acquired VirusTotal, a free security service that analyses suspicious files and URLs, for an undisclosed amount. According to VirusTotal’s announcement, the two companies had been partners for quite some time, and now VirusTotal will continue to operate independently, reaping the benefits of Google’s resources.
Per the agreement, which was spotted by Mikko Hypponen, VirusTotal states that it will maintain its partnerships with outside antivirus companies and security experts. A 30-year-old Phoenix man was sentenced Thursday to 30 months in prison for using botnets and selling access to them, the US Department of Justice announced.
Joshua Schichtel, allegedly connected to a group of hackers who used denial-of-service attacks to target businesses, was sentenced in US District Court for the District of Columbia. Schichtel was allegedly a member of the so-called DDoS mafia, a group of hackers that attacked websites on behalf of a business owner, but 2004 charges in California were dropped because prosecutors didn’t file an indictment by the required deadline.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has pulled out of a speech at the Australian Christian Lobby’s national conference, after its managing director compared the health effects of smoking to homosexuality.
Ms Gillard said Jim Wallace’s comments were heartless and wrong
and it would be inappropriate
for her to attend the conference next month.
Mr Wallace made the remarks in Tasmania yesterday during a debate with Greens leader Christine Milne on the merits of same-sex marriage.
I think we’re going to owe smokers a big apology when the homosexual community’s own statistics for its health — which it presents when it wants more money for health — are that it has higher rates of drug-taking, of suicide, it has the life of a male reduced by up to 20 years,
he told the audience.
The life of smokers is reduced by something like seven to 10 years and yet we tell all our kids at school they shouldn’t smoke.
