The Museum of Modern Art, Columbia University and The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation have announced that the vast archives of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) have been jointly acquired by the University and the Museum and will become part of their permanent collections. The archive, which includes some 23,000 architectural drawings, 44,000 historical photographs, large-scale models, manuscripts, extensive correspondence and other documents, has remained in storage at Wright’s former headquarters — Taliesin (Spring Green, WI) and Taliesin West (Scottsdale, AZ) — since his death. A Sydney-based Exclusive Brethren doctor has been banned from medicine after prescribing chemical castration for a young gay New Zealander.
In 2008, Exclusive Brethren member and GP Mark Christopher James Craddock wrote the 18-year-old a prescription for the anti-androgen therapy cyproterone acetate (Cyprostat) during a brief home consultation.
The young gay man, who now lives in Auckland, was living in Sydney at the time. He has since left the church.

A woman at a Japanese nursing home has been bitten by a redback spider, with a search of the home uncovering 30 of the venomous Australian natives.
The 86-year-old woman was bitten on the leg at a nursing home in Fukuoka in the country’s west.

Gene therapy has been used to give mice born without a sense of smell the ability to sniff their surroundings, an international team of researchers say.
The mice had a genetic disease which affected microscopic hairs in their body — called cilia — which can detect chemicals in the air.
Researchers hope their findings will lead to treatments for diseased cilia, which can cause blindness, deafness and kidney disease in people.
The study is in Nature Medicine.
Microscopic cilia stick out from many cells in the body. A range of genetic disorders called ciliopathies result in damaged cilia which can be fatal or severely debilitating. One symptom can be a lifetime without a sense of smell, called congenital anosmia — via redwolf.newsvine.com

The nation’s largest telco Telstra has claimed in a submission to the competition regulator that it can’t deploy naked DSL broadband services to customers and other ISPs as doing so would require it to undertake significant development of its IT systems, which require a phone line to be connected before broadband can be provided.
A number of Telstra’s major rivals, such as iiNet and TPG, have sold so-called naked DSL
services, where ADSL broadband is provided to customers without the requirements of a bundled traditional PSTN telephone line, for half a decade. iiNet, for example, first launched naked DSL to customers in November 2007, and had 131,000 customers using the service in June last year. Many of iiNet’s customers bundle cheap IP telephony services with its naked DSL platform. However, Telstra has consistently declined to provide the service to customers, preferring instead to sell bundled services including monthly traditional PSTN line rental plans, which are typically more expensive than IP telephony options.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is currently examining the case for stronger regulation of the way in which Telstra provides wholesale ADSL services to retail ISPs such as iiNet, TPG and Optus. In a submission (PDF) to that process released last week (and first reported by iTNews), Telstra argued that the ACCC should not force is to provide new services such as a wholesale version of naked DSL — via redwolf.newsvine.com
Actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who rose to prominence playing a death row inmate in the acclaimed film The Green Mile, has died at the age of 54.
Duncan suffered a heart attack in July and died at a hospital in Los Angeles after failing to recover.
A former bodyguard, the 6ft 4in (1.93m) Duncan was an imposing figure who played a wide variety of screen roles.
