Be on the lookout for Captain Awesome!

Eugene-Springfield, meet Captain Awesome.

Not that the former Douglas Allen Smith Jr is a newcomer to Lane County.

He was born here in 1983. He graduated from Willamette High School in 2002.

But he officially became Captain Awesome only last month, when a Lane County Circuit Court judge approved his name change petition — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Angry Birds — Plush!

My boys (husband included, but especially the boys!) are obsessed with the game Angry Birds. They like the game, but they really like to play a real life version they invented, where they chuck objects at each other. (Don’t worry! They use safe projectiles for this!) I want to make their game a little more fun for them, so I am creating some Angry Birds and pigs for them to play with — via Obsessively Stitching

Tumblr Is Down

Two hours and counting and the blogging platform is still down. Whatever are we to do without The Daily What and all those other delightful blogs?

According to The Next Web and CenterNetworks, Tumblr has been down for two hours now, causing a lot of derision among folks on Twitter — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

For the past eight weeks, the biggest-selling song in Germany has been a cover version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow by a morbidly obese, ukulele-playing Hawaiian named Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. But any new fans hoping to see him perform will be as disappointed as the song’s publisher, who heard the version a few years ago, realised the lyrics were slightly wrong, and asked Leah Bernstein at the Mountain Apple record label if she could ask him to re-record it. Well I’d really love to, Bernstein replied, but he’s dead — via redwolf.newsvine.com

French court to rule on Concorde crash

A French court will today declare whether who, if anyone, is to blame for the crash of a Concorde airliner outside Paris that killed 113 people more than 10 years ago.

Its verdict, after a four-month trial this year, will determine whether European engineers or a US company and two of its staff were responsible for the disaster, which sounded the death knell for the first era of suspersonic commercial flight — via redwolf.newsvine.com

IE6 Won’t Die as Long as China Loves it

A Microsoft executive’s self-described job of driving Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) into extinction will be difficult unless he can move Chinese users off the aged browser.

According to data from Web analytics firm Net Applications, 45.2% of China’s Internet users still rely on IE6 — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Honda GL1000 Gold Wing

Honda GL1000 Gold Wing

The custom motorcycle scene is driven by fashion as much as any other. Over the past couple of decades we’ve seen the rise of the ubiquitous CB750 custom, followed by the SR400/500 and Kawasaki W650. But now I’m starting to wonder if the next trend will be repurposed old sleds like the Honda Gold Wing. They seem to be popping up everywhere, and some of them are quite intriguing. Here’s one built by Texas-based Ric Becker, who sells and restores tandem bicycles for a living. In his spare time, Ric likes to build faster machines—like this 1976 GL1000 — via Bike EXIF
