Group offers ‘liberty’ from same-sex attraction

Describing himself as having spanned the entire gamut of relationships, Lung is now the executive director of Liberty League, a controversial Singapore support group which says it aims to help people who want to overcome same-sex attractions

We think that it is something that can be managed, it can be something that can be overcome, and there are people who have successfully come out of it, said Lung, who considered sex-change surgery when he was younger.

Set up in 2004, Liberty League is staffed by 10 volunteers and financed by grants from the government and private donors — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Grieder House / AFGH

The residence in Küsnacht near Zurich is a late work of the Swiss architect Theodor Laubi, built in 1956 on a plot of land with an ample garden and flanked by a forest. After several changes of owners and their corresponding conversions and extensions the house had lost its original modernistic character.

In 2005 the residence was fortunately taken over by new owners (a young couple – a gallery owner and an artist) who recognised the potential of the house. The opening of a gallery for contemporary art in the ground floor not only revitalised the house but also transformed it into a partial, semi-public building that profited the whole surrounding residential area — via ArchDaily

MotoMorphic JaFM

In the holiday spirit of not taking things too seriously, here’s a curve ball to throw into the Bike EXIF mix. A lot of strange contraptions come my way, but this Rotax-engined number is one of the most extreme motorcycles I’ve seen for a while. It’s built by Jim Davis of MotoMorphic—based in San Rafael, California—and costs $100,000 or more, according to specification — via Bike EXIF

Hedley Bull Centre / Lyons

Located at one of the principal gateways to the Australian National University’s campus this new building brings together three previously separate schools specialising in international relations and comparative politics into a new purpose designed facility — via ArchDaily

BR House / Marcio Kogan

In terms of an architectural proposition, the BR House located in the countryside could not be more intriguing: situated within the dense and impressive Rain Forest, circumscribing and penetrating the area, dominates all senses. The circumstances, from the inception, forces fundamental questions for architecture: how can architecture present itself and, if making itself present, how can it deliberately show itself as construction? A chalet or any other mimicry of puristic architecture, comfortably absorbed by the landscape, is a banal dissembling response; a denial of the confrontation which would deprive the traces of the radicalness and vigor arising from this contrast — via ArchDaily

Gang members taught first aid for stab wounds

Teaching young, violent criminals the first aid techniques that could save the lives of fellow gang members might seem a dangerous move but a new project doing exactly that is gaining the attention of youth offending teams across the country.

The brainchild of a group of medical students at Liverpool University, the course specialises in teaching teenagers already involved in knife and gun crime the skills to give pre-hospital care immediately after a penetrating injury.

The two-week Basics course is now a core part of Liverpool’s Young Offenders Team’s restorative justice programme. Youth offending experts in Nottinghamshire and medics in London have also expressed interest — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Sea lion found shot can’t return to the wild

A California sea lion found shot in the head at a Sausalito beach earlier this month will not be returning to the wild after an examination at the Marine Mammal Center on Monday found that he is completely blind.

The discovery that Silent Knight cannot see means that a new home must be found for him in the next several months or he might have to be euthanized, said Jeff Boehm, the center’s executive director — via redwolf.newsvine.com

How Twitter saved the day

There aren’t many fairy stories that start at 6pm on a Tuesday evening in Sydney. Even fewer have no mention of dragons, pumpkins or enchanted apples. But this is a new fable, a truly modern tale for the Twitter and social media non-believers. A fairytale 2.0 if you will — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Delicious In Purgatory

On December 16 Yahoo accidentally told the world they were shutting down popular bookmarking site Delicious. They fired most or all of the Delicious staff. Then they untold that story, saying they intended to sell it off and that the press got it all wrong.

Ok great. So how’s that sale process going?

Not so well, according to a handful of interested buyers I’ve spoken with. I know of five companies and venture firms that have reached out to Yahoo to talk about buying Delicious. Three of them have confirmed to me that Yahoo either hasn’t responded, or hasn’t responded with any serious level of engagement. According to one source, Yahoo has told people that they are planning on starting a sale process in mid-January — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Beat Pack / Studio LOOP

In past 60 years, as information technology progressively changed, in Japan, our housing industry has rapidly adjusted to it. This forced adjustment to our society has caused a transformation of our traditional lifestyle, and housing space has been often talked by nLDK; n (number of private rooms) L (living) D (dining) K (kitchen). The concept of nLDK is to describe how much value your house has. The spatial flexibility and relationship (private and public) among n, L, D, and K are separated and lost, and as a result, function started to walk alone.

Our proposal to these two houses, WITH and BEAT are to try to re-consider and re-organize a quality of relationship of nLDK to re-adjust to a current and a future lifestyle — via ArchDaily
