Dog tracks down ailing owner at hospital

Zander, a husky, was so upset when his owner was hospitalised that the pooch tracked him down and paid him a visit.

John Dolan was hospitalized with a skin condition last week. His wife says their dog Zander took it hard. She says the dog sulked and even cried.

Then Zander, seemingly decided he had to be by his owner’s bedside. Zander broke out of the Bay Shore home and made his way to the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Centre more than 2 miles away.

The four-legged friend likely went under the Robert Moses Parkway and across a busy four-lane road to get there. A hospital employee found the dog on the street outside of building where Dolan was being treated — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Oregon farmer eaten by pigs

Oregon authorities are investigating how a farmer was eaten by his pigs. Terry Vance Garner, 69, never returned after he set out to feed his animals last Wednesday on his farm near the Oregon coast, the Coos county district attorney said on Monday.

A family member found Garner’s dentures and pieces of his body in the pig enclosure several hours later, but most of his remains had been consumed, the district attorney, Paul Frasier, said. Several of the pigs weighed 320kg (700lb) or more.

It is possible Garner had a medical emergency, such as a heart attack, or was knocked over by the animals, then killed and eaten, Frasier said, adding that at least one pig had previously bitten Garner.

The possibility of foul play is being investigated as well. For all we know, it was a horrific accident, but it’s so doggone weird that we have to look at all possibilities, Frasier told the Register-Guard newspaper — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Red Panda / Zoo Planckendael

For the first time in Zoo Planckendael‘s history, a baby Red Panda has been born. The timid little new born is difficult to spot, but if you’re lucky, you’ll catch him scampering from one nest box to another under the watchful eye of her mother, Lolita. The female cub, named Nangwa (Tibetan for appearance) by keepers, is an ambassador for her imperilled species. The Red Panda is listed on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable because of habitat loss in their native Nepal. Timber from their natural environment is increasingly cut down for fuel and construction. Additionally, their reddish-brown fur is highly sought after — via ZooBorns

‘Squid from hell’ secrets revealed

Biologists say they have unlocked secrets about the vampire squid, a mysterious creature that feeds on the decaying dead in the unlit depths.

The squid is so weird that it is known as a phylogenetic relic. It has the honour of occupying a taxononomic category all of its own, combining features of octopuses and squids in a unique evolutionary formula that has survived for millions of years.

As Vampyroteuthis infernalis — the squid from hell — it is the only species in the Order Vampyromorpha, where it was placed in 1903 — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Black Rhinoceros / Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is celebrating some big news! For the first time in over 45 years there, a baby Black Rhinoceros was born to mum Azizi. The female calf weighs about 70 pounds and appears to be doing very well. We are so excited to welcome a big, beautiful, bouncing, female rhino, says Dr Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. The birth of a Black Rhino is significant because they are critically endangered and Azizi’s calf will introduce new blood lines into the zoo population — via ZooBorns

Small-clawed Otter / Perth Zoo

Meet Perth Zoo‘s new Asian Small-clawed Otter pups. Perth has had two litters of four pups born at the zoo in the past few months. One of the litters can be seen in their exhibit opposite the Red Pandas. Perth Zoo is part of regional breeding program for Otters and the births are the zoo’s first in 18 years. These highly social critters pair for life, with males playing an important role in the rearing of pups. Dad’s duties can include building the nest, supplying food for mum and her pups, as well as teaching the young to swim! Hunted for their fur, meat and body parts, otters are under threat in the wild — via ZooBorns

Heat’s off now, pooch, but it was close

Stiff, unresponsive and gasping for breath, it looked like the end was near for Mandy.

It was only when she saw her best friend, Bianca Otley, that she raised her head and, with the help of paramedic Sandy Macken, began fighting for life.

Mandy is a four-year-old pure-bred greyhound who was rescued from a futon factory fire in Marrickville and resuscitated by paramedics after 45 minutes.

Firefighters found Mandy lying underneath a bed in a dark, smoke-filled room as the Fantasy Futon factory burnt down — via redwolf.newsvine.com

No hard feelings after dog shoots huntsman in France

A leaping dog inadvertently shot his master in the hand by catching the trigger of his shotgun during a hunt in the Dordogne, south-western France.

The shot blew off part of the huntsman’s right hand, which he had to have amputated after being flown to hospital in Bordeaux.

But the victim, whose name was given as Rene, said he had only himself to blame for not applying the safety catch.

It wasn’t the dog’s fault — and he’s adorable! he told France Bleu radio — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Indian Rhino / Zoo Basel
