Police probe as 13 dogs are poisoned to death on country footpath

A popular dog walking spot has been closed after 16 pets mysteriously died or became ill.

Officials suspect the animals may have been poisoned, but no one knows if they were deliberately targeted or died by accident.

In almost all instances, the dogs collapsed and died in agony within minutes of returning from a walk along a tree-lined footpath which leads down to fields by a lake — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Live cattle exports to some abattoirs suspended

The federal government has suspended exports of live cattle to a number of killing facilities in Indonesia following last night’s exposure of brutal practices in some of the country’s abattoirs.

Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig said the decision was based on footage collected by Animals Australia that showed cattle being mistreated before slaughter.

I have decided to halt the trade of live animals to the facilities identified by the footage, he said in a statement today — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Modern Chicken Coop / Nicole Starnes Taylor

Check out this lively, modern chicken coop by Nicole Starnes Taylor of MAKE Design Studio. Taylor designed it for three chickens and their owners in urban Seattle. With a screen floor and castors, the mobile hen house fertilizes the underlying ground. Also, the coop has a hinged door for easy access and can be used as a chicken tractor if need be. Taylor built the 15 square-foot coop with salvaged framing lumber — via Jetson Green

Hungry eagle inadvertently swoops toy poodle away to better life

She’s a vagabond toy poodle, named May by SPCA staff because earlier this month she fell out of the sky and landed in the grounds of Sechelt’s Shorncliffe Nursing Home.

How she came to be flying over the nursing home is explained by the deep talon marks in her back and sides, showing she was probably the unwilling passenger of a hungry eagle that had picked her up but eventually found her 18 pounds too much to hold on to — via redwolf.newsvine.com
