Cassette Tape Crochet / Jennifer Cantwell

Unconsumption points us to artist, Jennifer Cantwell, who creates cool crochet doilies from old cassette tape.

This piece of work is made as a response to the feelings I get when I see a piece of work that’s taken many hours and has now been discarded or an album that’s been listened to over and over again and now replaced with newer technology, or an old library book stamped many times and now on a thrift shop shelf. I think about the many times that object was handled during its making/listening/reading and about the thoughts and the feelings, hopes and aspirations experienced during that time by the anonymous owner/maker.

MV Agusta 600 / Alan Elderton

Throughout the MV Agusta community, the 600 is affectionately known as The Black Pig. It’s one of the ugliest bikes ever made, but perhaps so ugly that it transcends style and fashion. Only 127 were built, between 1967 and the early 1970s, and this one is #11 — via Bike EXIF

Apple takes control of iCloud.com domain

Apple today took administrative control of the iCloud.com domain less than a week before CEO Steve Jobs is to unveil his company’s new cloud-based service.

According to WHOIS searches Wednesday, Apple is now listed as the owner of the iCloud.com domain. As late as Tuesday, the domain was still registered to Swedish firm Xcerion, which had used the URL for its online file-storage service — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Researchers track the secret lives of feral and free-roaming house cats

Researchers (and some cat-owners) wanted to know: What do feral and free-roaming house cats do when they’re out of sight? A two-year study offers a first look at the daily lives of these feline paupers and princes, whose territories overlap on the urban, suburban, rural and agricultural edges of many towns.

The study used radio telemetry and a sophisticated activity-tracking device to capture the haunts and habits of dozens of owned and un-owned cats living at the southern edge of Champaign and Urbana, neighbouring cities in Central Illinois. Together, the 42 adult cats originally radio-tracked for the study ranged over a territory of 2,544 hectares (6,286 acres) — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Type 21 Flyback Chronograph / Dodane

I recently put my hands on a spectacular watch from a little-known brand called Dodane 1857. For five generations now the brand is owned and operated by a French family of the same name. In addition to supplying its watches to French air force pilots, the company also produces cockpit instruments for the French air force. The Dodane Type 21 Flyback Chrono price is about $4,000 — via Perpetuelle

Crochet Version of The Double Wedding Ring Quilt / Red Heart Yarn

I’ve never thought about recreating popular quilt motifs in crochet before, but this double wedding ring version over on Red Heart Yarn has me seeing things in a whole new light. Brilliant idea!

Originally designed as a wedding gift for singer Josh Kelley and actress Katherine Heigl, this beautiful Double Wedding Ring crocheted quilt would be treasured by any bride and groom who receive it.

Cafe Scorpio / Deus

The Yamaha Scorpio has been derided as a hopped-up farm bike, but in Asia it’s the perfect commuter machine. It’s also a bike that Deus Bali has put on the operating table more than once. This is Deus’ latest cafe racer, the Café Scorpio, and once again, it’s a remarkable transformation — via Bike EXIF
