Leading Australian politicians and former defence chiefs are demanding an independent investigation, along the lines of the Chilcot inquiry in Britain, into their country’s role in the invasion of Iraq.
They say an independent inquiry must investigate the circumstances that led the then National-Liberal coalition to participate in the US-led invasion in 2003 in which Australia contributed 2,000 troops, including special forces. It must also conduct a review of the war powers of the government, and draw lessons for the future.

Ron Palillo wanted to be known as more than Arnold Horshack, to be recognised for the breadth of his career, which spanned 1970s television to New York theatre, as an actor, playwright and illustrator, and, finally as a dedicated teacher.
Still, he’d do the laugh if you asked.
I think he looked at it as a launching-off point for his career, but he was such a wonderful actor, into the more serious stuff,
longtime friend Stacy Sacco said of Horshack, the goofy class cut-up and rebellious Sweathog that Mr Palillo played on the 1970s series Welcome Back, Kotter, alongside series creator and actor Gabe Kaplan and a young John Travolta.
He appreciated that it was such an iconic character,
added Sacco. And he would absolutely do that imitation.

A WA mortgage broker who got rich by fudging figures
has blown the whistle on the banks that conspired in Australia’s own sub-prime mortgage scandal.
In 2007 Kate Thompson was WA mortgage broker of the year. Now she is facing fraud charges.
It is alleged Mortgage Miracles, in Canning Vale in Western Australia, obtained investment loans for customers by using falsely inflated earnings and assets.
Ms Thompson admits that is exactly what she did.
I would get upfront commission, I would get a trailing commission. I was probably earning about $5 million a year. It was great. It was wonderful. But it was all a lie,
she said.
