How-To: Bronze Rocking Horse

My mother collects rocking horses. She tries to get at least one each year for Christmas. This year, she couldn’t find anything she liked in the stores, so I made her one out of brass stock I had lying around.

I did a little CAD drawing to help myself visualize what it would look like. You might find it useful. There are very few dimensions, but you can still use it as a guide to bending the stock. The drawing is 1:1, so if you print out the PDF, you can just lay the bent metal on the paper to check the contour — via CRAFT

Steampunk / Romain Jerome

The Steampunk is large at 50mm wide and the bezel is oxidized metal (going with the Titanic DNA theme). The X motif of the bezel claws are continued with screws that go deep into the dial. These screws are also meant to resemble steam engine pistons. The large Roman numeral hour markers for 12 and 6 are large and purposes done in a scratched-up texture. We have seen these hands before – and they are meant to evoke the Titanic’s anchor — via A Blog to Read

Rare Exports: The Official Safety Instructions

Not meant for the public eye, this film reveals the dark reality of what’s wrong with company’s product. With its primitive instincts triggered by bad behaviour of people around it, the seemingly tame Father Christmas will forget the intensive training and turn into a brutal beast. You better watch out, you better not cry, There’s no room for mistakes — via YouTube

Epiphany School / Miller Hull Partnership

The Epiphany School is a recently opened expansion of a Pre-K-5 school in the Madrona neighborhood of Seattle. The project includes a new classroom building and a public art space, and in order to make way for the new building, four houses were removed from the site, with two of them relocated to other parts of the city. The architectural character of the project mimics the scale of the neighborhood and consists of individual roof forms — via ArchDaily

Remove Water From Your Camera Or Phone With Rice

It’s a common problem: your beloved smart phone gets wet, and suddenly it’s not functioning so well. Blogger Darian Cabot tried an oft-quoted trick — putting the phone in dry rice to let it absorb the moisture — and found it worked very well.

Cabot’s post is appealing in part because he freely admits that the phone got damaged after a night of drinking rather than blaming external factors, but also demonstrates that water plus phone doesn’t always have to be a fatal combination. We’ve offered up similar hints in the past, but it’s always good to see a technique used successfully — via lifehacker

When it comes to online shopping, Australia’s consumers are 15 years ahead of our retailers

It’s amusing to see the country’s biggest retailers on TV pleading their case for a GST on imports and talking about Australian workers and jobs. After decades of sourcing the lowest possible manufacturing prices from India, China, and Vietnam, we have to defend Australian jobs by paying GST on our overseas Internet purchases under $1000 — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Desert Dome: 360-Degree Home on a (Dormant) Volcano

Somewhat sadly, this home (that sits on a volcanic cone) has sat on the market on and off for a few years now. Perhaps the price tag is putting off customers (clocking in at three quarters of a million dollars) … or maybe it is the prospect of living high up in the high desert.

360-degree views in every direction look out on the alien landscape on all sides and flat cracked sandscape below. The mid-century, sort-of-modern interior could well be the lair for some James Bond supervillian … the exterior, well, it almost looks like the tip of a missile emerging from the ground — via Dornob

Would You Build a Bentley in Your Backyard?

That’s how Alexander Kolbe of HUF HAUS forthrightly justifies the factory-built houses the luxury building company has made since 1910. And it makes perfect sense. While here in America, the Prefab movement seems to be forever teetering on the brink of extinction, in Europe, it thrives. More homes are built in factories there.  HUF HAUS is one such prefab company from Germany that builds modular post and beam homes — via Home Design Find

Fox Trapped on Ice in Hudson River Rescued by Firefighters

A gray fox is finally safe after being trapped on ice under the Dunn Memorial Bridge.

Firefighters say they were passing through when someone flagged them down about the stranded fox. They first tried a tug boat, but it was too heavy, causing the ice to crack even more. Officials say they then called a rescue boat in, which made their mission a success — via alysmum.newsvine.com
