How iTunes buyers are ripped off

Australian music fans are forging foreign iTunes accounts to make big savings on their purchases.

The practice, which is a direct breach to iTunes terms and conditions, has exposed the inflated price that Australians pay to access songs off the popular music and entertainment site.

By creating an American iTunes account through the use of a US credit card or gift card, users are saving up to 80c per song and $7 per album.

The recently released Beatles box set collection can be bought with a saving of more than $A100.

Deals offered on the internet also include $US50 vouchers on sale for $US40, increasing the savings further for music buyers — via vanessa-wilson73.newsvine.com

Sudden spam drop leaves experts baffled

Spam volumes appear to have dropped to averages last seen in 2008 after an expected surge in bogus email over the Christmas period failed to materialise.

Estimating real spam volumes is a notoriously difficult exercise thanks to a tendency of spam to naturally ebb and flow over time and the fact that no agency has a single view on the phenomenon. However, figures revealed in recent weeks by a number of companies that have compiled stats make curious reading – every vendor’s figures show a fall of some sort — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Angkor Wat

A major symbol of Cambodia itself, Angkor Wat is one of the oldest temples in the world that still functions as the significant religious center it was built to be. Constructed in the early 12th century for King Suryavarman II (ruled 1113-1150), Angkor Wat was a state temple and capital city for the community, first as a Hindu establishment and eventually becoming a Buddhist temple.

The style of Angkor Wat is the epitome of classical Khmer architecture. The two primary ties between this temple and architecture of the Khmer style is the temple mountain and gallery temples. It was inspired by the home of the gods in Hindu mythology, called Mount Meru. It is surrounded by a moat and a wall 3.6km long, and the three rectangular galleries are distinguished by level changes of the ground — via ArchDaily

Theatre Agora / UNStudio

The Agora Theatre is an extremely colourful, determinedly upbeat place. The building is part of the masterplan for Lelystad by Adriaan Geuze, which aims to revitalize the pragmatic, sober town centre. The theatre responds to the ongoing mission of reviving and recovering the post-war Dutch new towns by focusing on the archetypal function of a theatre: that of creating a world of artifice and enchantment. Both inside and outside walls are faceted to reconstruct the kaleidoscopic experience of the world of the stage, where you can never be sure of what is real and what is not. In the Agora theatre drama and performance are not restricted to the stage and to the evening, but are extended to the urban experience and to daytime — via ArchDaily

Jorge Gudes’s House / 100 Planos Arquitectura

This project was commissioned in 2004 by a young couple who had purchased a piece of land and there planned to build their home. As initial conditions we just had the obligation of designing a single floor house for the lowest cost possible. One thing was obvious the site had a breathtaking view and this turned out to be the core of the whole project — via ArchDaily

Cthulhu Ski Hat: Stay Warm in Your Nightmare

If I saw someone coming down the street wearing this Cthulhu-inspired ski hat, I’d either think they were nuts, or they were really nuts.

It was knit by CraftyPA, and she’s also made one in red, in case the traditional green Cthulhu isn’t for you. For some reason, the red version looks more like Dr Zoidberg than Cthulhu to me, though. I always wanted to go as Zoidberg for Halloween, so maybe I’ll get that one for my costume for next year. I’ll just need some lobster claws to go with it — via Technabob

Uncle Sam’s Values – At Bat for Monsanto WikiLeaks US targets EU over GM crops

The US embassy in Paris advised Washington to start a military-style trade war against any European Union country which opposed genetically modified (GM) crops, newly released WikiLeaks cables show.

In response to moves by France to ban a Monsanto GM corn variety in late 2007, the ambassador, Craig Stapleton, a friend and business partner of former US president George Bush, asked Washington to penalise the EU and particularly countries which did not support the use of GM crops — via pameladrew.newsvine.com
