Hunt on for a killer rooster

Indian police are hunting for a killer rooster after the fighting bird slashed its owner’s throat with razor blades attached to its legs for the cruel sport of cockfighting.

Hurteau-Miller Cottage / Kariouk Associates

This cottage is designed for a couple with a young son and will serve as a center-point for the gatherings of a greatly extended family and will one day become the family’s primary residence. The challenge was to implement an architectural strategy that breaks down very large programmatic requirements and, as a result, the seeming bigness of the proposed home. The spatial system therefore is conceived as a porous and open ground-floor that supports a solid, “private” volume above. All of the primary living and communal functions, such as the indoor and outdoor living rooms, kitchen and eating area, and sauna open either literally or volumetrically to the surrounding lakeshore — via ArchDaily

Reset the Printing System

I encountered a problem recently where Word would not save, and Photoshop and other applications would not launch after an upgrade to 10.6 from 10.4.

Essentially what I needed to do was reset the printing system. While this was easily achieved in 10.5/10.4 it’s not so easy in 10.6 especially when CUPS would not launch — via Mac OS X Hints

God as guard: Bank opens ‘lockless’ branch

The United Commercial (UCO) Bank has opened the country’s first lockless branch at Shani Shinganapur in Maharashtra, even as the Centre has made hi-tech security mandatory for all nationalized and private sector banks. Shani Shinganapur is a small village in Ahmednagar district whose presiding deity is Lord Shani. More than 5,000 devotees visit the temple every day, while on weekends the number crosses the 1 lakh mark.

We took note of the general belief and faith of the people. Ever since the most revered temple came into existence several years ago, the village has not witnessed a single crime. In fact, all houses in the entire village have no doors. We took the risk and started the lockless bank a week ago, a senior bank official said — via redwolf.newsvine.com

De Bethune DB25T Tourbillon Regulator

The new De Bethune DB25T Tourbillon Regulator manual-wind watch features a self-regulating twin-barrel movement and a feather-light tourbillon escapement with jumping seconds.

Powered by the DB25T hand-wound movement, the watch sports an ultra-light (the company claims that it is in fact the lightest of its type) silicon/titanium tourbillon carriage, which is made of fifty parts and tips the scales at 0.18 gram — via World Watch Review

Northwest Peach Farm by Bates Masi Architects

Bates Masi Architects designed the Northwest Peach Farm in East Hampton, New York.

This residence is primarily used when the clients’ extended family comes from England for long visits. They come to relax and to reconnect with their family and with nature, away from city crowds and traffic, at a retreat they neither want nor need to leave for a month. The design objective was to make every day of that month unique by providing a range of destinations within the site with diverse scales, functions, and views: from gathering in the expansive living room overlooking the fields of the former peach orchard to reading alone on a shaded bench between the library and the edge of the forest. Multiple paths and hallways connect each destination, further increasing variety. Finally, each detail and custom furnishing is designed to make mundane rituals into thoughtful events — via CONTEMPORIST

Celebrities in Advertising Are Almost Always a Big Waste of Money

As the most significant event in advertising grows nearer, it will be interesting to see how many brands enlist the endorsement services of celebrities during the Super Bowl. After all, popular wisdom asserts that getting a celebrity endorsement is a tried-and-true, simple-to-implement way to maximize advertising effectiveness. Sure, it’s expensive, but celebrities always yield stronger ties with viewers and, ultimately, greater sales, right?

Wrong. Over the course of last year, time and time again we observed incredibly low effectiveness scores of TV ads starring celebrities. From Tiger Woods to Donald Trump, we found that with rare exception, celebrity endorsements were largely ineffective and failed to yield the benefits popular wisdom promises — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Chemistry Crayon Labels by QueInteresante

Children play and draw with crayons practically every day, so why not make the experience more educational? While children are coloring, they are also exposed to the names of chemicals that will make those colors! So instead of thinking I want green they will think I want Barium Nitrate Ba(NO3)2 Flame and then when they take chemistry in high school and their teacher sets some gas on fire and it makes a green color and they ask the class what chemical it was your student will know it was Barium! Genius! — via Etsy
