Bob Brown resigns as Greens leader and Senator

Bob Brown has resigned as leader of the Australian Greens. He will also resign from the Senate.

Senator Brown made the shock announcement to his Greens Party colleagues this morning.

I am sad to leave but happy to go. It is good knowing that the Greens have such a depth of talent and experience lined up for leadership – I could only dream about that a decade ago, Senator Brown said in a statement.

It is prime time to hand over the reins — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Silly Putty for Potholes

So-called non-Newtonian fluids are the stars of high school science demonstrations. In one example, an ooey-gooey batter made from corn starch and water oozes like a liquid when moved slowly. But punch it, or run across a giant puddle of it, and it becomes stiff like a solid. Pour it on top of a speaker cone, and the vibrations cause the fluid to stiffen and form strange tendril-like shapes. Now, a group of college students has figured out a new use for the strange stuff: filler for potholes.

The students, undergraduates at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, devised the idea as part of an engineering contest sponsored by the French materials company Saint-Gobain — and took first prize last week. The objective was to use simple materials to create a novel product.

So we were putzing around with different ideas and things we wanted to work with—and we were like, what’s a common, everyday problem all around the world that everybody hates?” explains 21-year-old team member Curtis Obert. And we landed on potholes. He and four other students decided on a non-Newtonian fluid as a solution because of its unusual physical properties. When there’s no force being applied to it, it flows like a liquid does and fills in the holes, says Obert, “but when it gets run over, it acts like a solid — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Teens break up with Facebook

In May 2012 Facebook is set to launch one of the top-25 IPOs in history. By May 2013 it may well be scrambling to keep investors happy, given the apparent flight of teenagers to Twitter, Pinterest, and flavour-of-the-month social media. It’s not that Facebook has lost its mojo. It’s that it may be becoming cool with the wrong sort of people: parents — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Murcia Attic Refurbishment / Clavel Arquitectos

In the southern Spanish city of Murcia, ancient buildings line the streets and add a particular type of character to the locale. One home in particular embraces the centuries-old charm on the street level but goes for the futuristic look up top.

Clavel Arquitectos were called in to rehab an existing attic and turn it into a stylish penthouse-style art gallery/living space addition. But what would a project like this be without some strict regulations or unusual challenges to get around? The building was under strict regulations that made it impossible to modify the positions of the attic’s exterior walls — via Dornob

Twitter helps free kidnapped South African from trunk of his car

A South African man, whose name has not been published, was car-jacked, robbed, and stuffed into the trunk of his car near Johannesburg on Sunday. The robbers, however, had overlooked his mobile phone, which he used to text his girlfriend, Lynn Peters. From there, Twitter took over.

Two armed men grabbed the driver and his Volkswagen Golf in the Honeydew area north-west of Johannesburg at about 9.00pm local time. Car-jacking is a crime that is common in the country — over 10,000 such incidents occurred last year.

Peters immediately tweeted, Be on the look for DSS041GP my boyufriend [sic] has just been hijacked and is in the boot please RT.

RT they did, including Peters’ friend, Tanisha Reddy. From her it was picked up by well-known SA Twitterer, @pigspotter, who retweeted it to his 100,000-plus followers. @pigspotter specialises in identifying and sharing the location of police roadblocks. The police forces in South Africa have frequently been accused of graft and violence, so it does not seem to be criminals alone who make a point of avoiding roadblocks — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Facebook ‘likes’ Instagram with $1B price tag

Facebook, just weeks away from what’s expected to be the biggest Internet IPO in history, today signed a deal to acquire the hugely popular photo-sharing smartphone app Instagram in a cash and stock deal valued at about $1 billion.

Facebook has made a slew of acquisitions to date, but nothing of this scale. But Instagram is a 2-year-old startup that comes with some 33 million users and a growth rate that’s the envy of Silicon Valley.

Photo-sharing has been a big part of Facebook’s success, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now making a big bet that it will be a critical part of its future — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Nomad / Analog Motorcycles

Tony Prust of Illinois-based Analog Motorcycles builds classy customs based on 1970s-vintage Japanese motorcycles: his Yamaha RD350 is one of the most popular machines we’ve featured this year. So here’s his latest build, commissioned by the owner of a design company based on Amelia Island, off the coast of Nassau County in Florida.

The bike is called Nomad, and the starting point was a 1974 Kawasaki KZ400—a simple four-stroke, air-cooled twin. In stock form, the KZ400 is a somewhat staid and functional machine, but Prust has customized almost everything apart from the engine — via Bike EXIF

Lanouaille House / Dordogne

Price? 216,000 Euros, which works out at around £180,000. That looks like value to us — via WowHaus

Twin Rail Mobius Pendant / stop4stuff

Inspired by the well known mobius strip (discovered by August Ferdinand Mobius in 1858), an interest in the unusual, and 3D modelling, I created the Twin Rail mobius pendant.

A half shell and 3 rails form a bearing-like structure to encapsulate a train of 6mm balls in a mind-warping cage with a twisting, fascinating movement bringing to life the only pendent of its kind in the world.

Includes a 4mm loop for attaching to a necklace or leather cord — via Shapeways

CSIRO eyes microwave backhaul market

CSIRO has begun talks with global manufacturers to commercialise microwave technology it says can provide at least 10 Gbps symmetric backhaul services to mobile towers.

The project, funded out of the Science and Industry Endowment Fund and a year in planning, could provide a ten-fold increase in the speed of point-to-point microwave transmission systems within two years, according to project manager, Dr Jay Guo — via redwolf.newsvine.com
