Your Shoes Are Rubbish / Billy Turvey

Your Shoes Are Rubbish from Billy Turvey on Vimeo.

This Project is about the out of sight and out of mind legacy of the modern consumer. Taking the shoe as a prime example: What used to be a hand crafted item made to last and designed to be repairable, now spends an almost insignificant amount of time on the ground doing what it was made for.

As soon as the first component on a modern shoe fails, the pair is often discarded. The mass produced shoe is now essentially disposable. After you’ve finished with them they’re just another (two) piece(s) of rubbish that are likely to still be around long after your own body has decomposed; we’re all leaving behind ourselves a rubbish legacy. With the development of plastics came a utopian promise to change the world, and change the world it has, plastic has become so materially ingrained in our lives and environment that it’s becoming increasingly indistinguishable and inseparable from nature. We took this as a starting point and set out to mine this plastic pollution, we collected rubbish from the west and the south coast of England and the banks of the river Thames. Following this we made a pair of shoes out of the rubbish that all our consumer goods are destined to become. A satirical critique of the legacy we consumers leave in our wake. Far from suggesting we all wear shoes made from rubbish, the project is a talking point around which to stage a conversation about the consumerism game we’re all caught up in

Blue-ringed Octopus Cake / cakecrumbs

This is a cake I was commissioned to do by one of my Uni friends. We did both our Zoology degrees together: I was on the terrestrial side of it, where she was marine biology focused. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when she asked me for a marine-themed cake — via deviantART

Bug / Janis Straupe

There aren’t many of us who would welcome an enormous bug into our homes, but the BUG armoire from Latvian designer Janis Straupe is a definite exception. The beautiful wooden cabinet takes the shape of a huge beetle that opens into a plethora of cubbies, drawers, and storage spaces. The magnificent scarab-shaped closet is a one-of-a-kind original that was inspired by an actual beetle the designer encountered while out on a walk. The bug’s rounded shell and elaborately shaped legs are recreated in the warm wood, making the piece of furniture an incredible work of nature-inspired art — via Dornob

Silver hedgehog ring / Michael Tatom

Who doesn’t love hedgehogs. So prickly when they are curled up and so cute when they uncurl in your hand exposing their shy pointy faces. This ring is sterling silver and available in 2 different finishes; satin with a polished head or all high polish — via Etsy

Hitman / Fancy Boy

A man hires a professional killer to get rid of a business associate in this sketch from Fancy Boy. As the terms are negotiated, each tries to outwit the other. Or, to be exact, they aren’t trying all that hard. Someone didn’t think their plan through well enough ahead of time — via Youtube

Tower of Hercules / La Coruña, Spain

This is the Tower of Hercules near La Coruña, Spain — the northwestern tip of the Iberian peninsula. It may be the only ancient lighthouse still in use. It’s possible that a Phoenician work preceded it, but we can be sure that a Roman structure lies at the core of this tower. The Romans built it sometime during the reign of Emperor Trajan (r. 98-117 AD), who was himself from an area that forms modern Spain. The Romans referred to it in classical writings as Farum Brigantium.

During the Eighteenth Century, the architect Eustaquio Giannini conducted a renovation of the site, building a 49m tower over the original 34m Roman one — via Neatorama

Uranus City: the last outpost in our solar system. The rarely visited and near-empty space station Sage orbits the city and its inhabitants. Two remain stranded on board, a human called Jemima and a bored and lonely alien tourist called London. Oblivious to the danger, they missed boarding the last escape pods to evacuate the station's population to the city below. London’s unresisting affection for Jemima is tested when she comes up with a plan to escape their situation, whether he likes it or not. The short is a stop motion film, animated with characters made with armature bodies and hand-drawn replacement faces, and sets made primarily with cardboard

High Court injunction blocks handover of 153 asylum seekers to Sri Lanka

The High Court has granted an interim injunction to block the handover of 153 asylum seekers to Sri Lanka, just hours after the Government confirmed another vessel had been returned.

On Monday the court heard an urgent claim from barristers seeking to protect the group, which includes 32 women and 37 children and is believed to be under the Government’s control at sea.

We argued that the asylum seekers are entitled to have their allegations — claims against the Sri Lankan government — heard and processed in accordance with the law, solicitor George Newhouse said.

The Minister can’t simply intercept them in the night and disappear them — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Lawn Mower Fox / Wildlife Aid

Simon, the Founder of Wildlife Aid Foundation, was called out to rescue an adult Fox that was tangled up in a shed somewhere in Epsom.

To his amazement, the lady opened the door to a very embarrassed looking fox who had come a cropper on a lawn mower’s power cable.

Simon struggled to understand just how the poor Fox could get so entangled in such a small piece of exposed cable. He did his best to restore the Fox’s dignity and freedom, however the constriction on his leg was too bad and required treatment back at the wildlife hospital.

As it’s St George’s Day we have decided to called the Fox St George (only for online referencing), however we can’t see him slaying any Dragon’s anytime soon — via Youtube

Suspected spy arrested in Germany for passing US information on NSA inquiry

An alleged spy has been arrested in Germany accused of passing the US information from a committee looking into NSA activities.

It has heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries following allegations in the Edward Snowden leaks that the US electronic spy agency tapped Angela Merkel’s phone along with wider surveillance of German citizens.

The German government has not denied reports by Der Spiegel and the Sueddeutsche Zeitung that the suspected spy was a double agent and worked for Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the BND.

The newspapers said the man allegedly passed the US information about a German parliamentary committee’s investigation into the NSA’s activities.

He claimed to have worked with US intelligence since 2012, they reported — redwolf.newsvine.com
