Australian Idioms Illustrated / Jared Atkins

No trip to a new country would be complete without experiencing the culture that makes it unique. Indulging in the local food, attending festivals and visiting museums is easy but getting to know the language is a great way to take your understanding and appreciation to a whole new level. Hotel Club asked Australian illustrator and animator Jared Atkins to depict some typical as well as some of the more quirky Australian sayings you might come across on your next trip — via Hotel Club

Retro toy fridge + cooker / Maileg

These would look pretty cool in any retro kitchen but, at just under 30cm high, the Maileg retro toy fridge and cooker, available from Tea and Kate, are definitely meant for kids. They are meant to accompany the toy rabbits made by this Danish company, but we reckon they’ll work pretty well for any kind of play. Both of these objects are made from wood and it’s the attention to detail that makes them such winners.

The fridge opens to reveal a freezer section and two shelves, while who wouldn’t fancy a grown-up version of the colourful kettle and saucepan that comes with the cooker? The stove is priced at £20, while the fridge is £30 — via Retro To Go

“Watch Out! There’s a Politician About” Election Week Posters (1975) / Scarfolk Council

The general election will soon be upon us so we thought we’d upload a new poster every day during the week’s run up.

All the posters are from the 1970s Watch Out! There’s a Politician About campaign.

Just before the Scarfolk election of 1975 the ruling party was keen to permanently eradicate all political opposition and set out to smear what it called a hazardous surplus of politicians and others suffering from civic delusional disorders. The incumbent’s aim was to bring about a state of emergency that would permit a legal postponement of the election, a postponement that could, in theory, become indefinite.

The smear campaigns knew no bounds as one politician after another was exposed for corruption, sexual and moral improprieties, and poor table manners. The media was awash with reports that many election candidates were telepathically controlled by immigrants, who, it was alleged, were all born of the same non-human mother and functioned as a hive mind.

As the campaign gathered pace, there were even false flag acts of terror. For example, when a bomb destroyed the headquarters of the National Health Service in May 1975, it was blamed on exploding lice carried by the children of liberal and intellectual parents, and in the same month a plot was uncovered to shackle the UK to mainland Europe with billions of tonnes of string below the waves of the English channel.

Use your vote wisely. Alternatively, vote for one of the parties currently on offer — via Scarfolk Council

Camera Thief / Victor Huang

while trying to get video of a wild octopus, it suddenly dashed towards me and rips my shiny new camera from out of my hands, then swims off, all while the camera is recording! he swam away very quickly like a naughty shoplifter. after a 5 minute chase, I placed my speargun underneath him and he quickly and curiously grabbed hold of the gun as well, giving me enough time to reach in and grab the camera from out of his mouth. I didn’t feel threatened at all during the whole ordeal. he seemed to be fixated on the shiny metallic blue digital camera. the only confusing behaviour was how he dashed off with it like a thief haha. cheeky octopus — via Youtube

Wildlife

Coastal Peacock Spider (Maratus speciosus) / Peacockspiderman

This spider is a male Maratus speciosus (Coastal peacock spider) and this is its way to appeal to a potential female mate (the brown spider at the end). It is approximately 4 mm in length and inhabits coastal dunes near Perth in Western Australia. There are many equally colourful spiders in Australia that do something similar, have a look at the other videos on my channel. However the asymmetric and staccato legwork of this one is unique, and so are the clown face and orange hairs on its back. Hard to believe but there is no footage of this species yet in any wildlife documentary and although it has been known since 1874, it was not until I photographed and filmed it recently that the world took notice — via Youtube

Design

Cruz / Vintage Electric

The limited edition Cruz electric bicycle by Vintage Electric is the second design from the company and available in strictly limited numbers (50 to be precise), this is a wonderful vintage-style bike out of California, able to zip along at 58kph at full speed and in race mode.

Of course, you can do some more sedate riding too, with a charge of the battery able to take you around 48km in total. Good for a fairly local commute you would guess, but make sure you remember to charge, which takes around two hours.

Also present is a regenerative braking system, Shimano Alfine hydraulic disk brakes and bags of vintage style no matter what colour you go for. You get to choose from three colour options, all priced at US$4,995 — via Retro To Go
