Australia’s first body farm aims to answer forensic questions

Any fan of Patricia Cornwell’s crime fiction novel The Body Farm will have a reasonably good idea of what goes on in one.

For those in the dark, a body farm is a large expanse of bushland where donated human bodies are buried for the purposes of scientific study. There are several in the United States, but up until now there haven’t been any in Australia.

Some of them may be placed on the surface, some may be placed in burials, there may be other concealed environments that we’ll mimic and then we’ll just start studying the decomposition process. Shari Forbes, Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research

The country’s first body farm, the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research is due to officially open early next year. It’s come about after an exhaustive search for the right patch of land and the right partners.

It has to be a remote location but still accessible to police, to forensic investigators. It also needs the support of a university with a body donation program, says Shari Forbes, a forensic chemist and the farm’s coordinator.

Forbes can’t reveal the exact location but can say that it’s at the base of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney — via redwolf.newsvine.com

During his career, he won more than 30 titles and was inducted into WWE’s Hall of Fame in 2005.

His death comes a month after that of Dusty Rhodes, another Hall of Fame member, aged 69.

Lawn Darts: Illegal – But Lethal? / Joerg Sprave

Lawn darts are illegal in the US, and in several other countries too. They got banned because children died from accidental hits to the head.

But are they really lethal? We were set to find out. No problem legally, as we are in Germany where lawn darts are unregulated. Also, we tested homemade versions in order to compare. Last not least, we built a launcher that is chambered for the heavy (110-140gm) arrows — via Youtube

Frinton-on-Sea House / Oliver Hill

Oliver Hill designed this place around 1934-5, one of 35 houses intended as a showcase for modern British design. The current owner is an architectural designer who has thoroughly refurbished the property, adding on a striking steel and glass extension, but maintaining many of the period features. If you want to be the next owner, the asking price is £550,000 — via WowHaus

Zao Kitsune Mura / Rachel & Jun

We went with Sharla and Chris to the Fox Village at Mt Zao!! It was the most incredible place I’ve been in my life! I highly, highly recommend this for anyone visiting Japan. However, getting there is a bit tricky! You either need to drive a car, take an expensive taxi, or catch a questionable ride on a city bus in a city southwest of Sendai called Shiroishi. The details are on the website (in Japanese). The bus costs 200 yen and doesn’t actually stop at Fox Village, so apparently you need to tell the driver to stop there AND pick you up again on the way back, lol. Good luck adventuring?! — via Youtube

HP Davis Rockwell House / HP Davis Rockwell

The house was designed by HP Davis Rockwell of the Brenner Danforth Rockwell firm back in 1964 for his own use. The architect was a student of Mies van der Rohe and his modernist ideas obviously rubbed off on the pupil.

According to Curbed Chicago the design was a notable one back in the day too, with the American Institute of Architects presenting an award for its design back in 1965.

Some updating and maintaining has been undertaken over the following 50 years but by and large, this isn’t far off the original, with period features at pretty much every turn.

The house is up for sale with an asking price of $619,000, which works out at just £390,000 if you fancy the move to Illinois — via WowHaus

Ornamental Vespa Chair / It’s A Mod Thing

Novelty seating anyone? If you love a classic scooter, you just might want one (or more) of these Vespa-style indoor seats in your home. They look impressive, that’s for sure. As if someone has just chopped a chunk off a 1960s Vespa 150. Don’t worry though, that’s not the case. Each one is made to order, complete with fully upholstered seat, black and silver number plate (or your choice of reg number), chrome or black trim, rear light and mock access cover with lock. There’s a choice of colour too, which is good news if you are matching up. Not cheap though, with each one retailing for £175 — via Retro To Go
