Family finds pet tortoise that was missing for 30 years as they clean out dead father’s storeroom

When Leandro Almeida was taking out the trash, he really had no reason to believe he was throwing out a family pet that had been missing for 30 years.

But that’s what he almost did, according to Globo.com.

Almeida’s neighbour in Rio de Janeiro spotted the bag and asked Almeida if he was throwing out the turtle as well.

At that moment I was white and did not believe, explains Almeida.

Crawling around in a box with an old record player was Manuela, a red-footed tortoise the family had written off as lost back in 1982.

Manuela had disappeared during a home renovation, and the Almeidas always assumed he had escaped through a door left open by workers. However, it seems Manuela was hanging out for 30 years in the upstairs storeroom where Leonel Almeida, the father, kept all sorts of old junk he hadn’t gotten around to fixing up — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Rare marsupials found fat and happy in new home

A rare marsupial that had disappeared from Australia’s mainland is thriving near Canberra, with reports the population is fat and happy.

Last year a group of 17 eastern bettongs were brought to protected forest areas in Canberra from Tasmania, their first appearance on the mainland for 80 years.

Adrian Manning, from the Australian National University, says health checks show the small members of the kangaroo family are faring well, with about 35 bettongs leaving the pouch and about 20 more young on the way — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Crappy end to a spiky rescue

An echidna has been saved from being squashed at a Territory mine — and thanked his rescuer by leaving a poo in his hat.

The little bastard crapped in my hat and then crawled under the dash in the truck and into the wiring, said Munro Hardy, 25, the mine worker who rescued the spiky monotreme — via redwolf.newsvine.com
