Campaigners call on Spain to outlaw hanging of dog

The World Society for the Protection of Animals says thousands of greyhounds are hanged each year in Spain after the hare coursing season. This type of thing has always been a problem within greyhound sports throughout the world. Fortunately there are many groups, such as Greyhound Adoption Program and The Greyhound Project, who are actively retraining greyhounds as pets and offering them for adoption

Jail for owners who cut off puppy tails

Three moronic dog owners — Lloyd Earlington, David Hunkins and Julie Ward — have been jailed for three months each after 11 puppies died in a gross and barbaric tail-docking operation. And, on a happier note, Forgea, the Jack Russell Terrier abandoned when the tanker she was on caught fire and the crew were forced to flee, has finally been rescued after 24 days at sea alone

Frog dance on filling flaps fails flush

Eurobodalla Shire Council staff, on the NSW south coast, have taken a walk on the wild side to solve a problem with the public toilets at Bodalla Oval. The toilets had been working only on and off in recent weeks with no apparent reason for their fickle behaviour. But a close inspection by council staff revealed that frogs had taken up residence in the old-fashioned cisterns and were sitting on the flaps that allow the units to refill

Indian pigeons lose out to e-mail

India’s Police Pigeon Service — which for more than half a century has provided a lifeline during frequent floods and cyclones in eastern Orissa state — is to be scrapped, according to a government proposal that believes that the service has become redundant with the advent of e-mail and electronic communication. Google’s patented PigeonRank system will, no doubt, be happy to take on a few new recruits

Fear factor cuts back forests

Everything will be signposted and there will be few, if any, surprises. The British public’s fear of dark, imposing forests in which ghouls and goblins lurk has led the Forestry Commission to order a series of woodland makeovers

Polar Bears Facing Extinction

Scientists warn the melting Arctic ice cap could lead to polar bears becoming extinct. Studies show the decline in the thickness and extent of the ice cap is causing hundreds of bears to die each year. Many of the estimated 25,000 bears spend long periods trapped on land rather than ice, where they find it hard to feed

Killing Rats with GPS

When Channel Islands National Park officials needed an estimated about 300 rats exterminated on the east side of environmentally sensitive Anacapa Island, Aspen Ag Helicopters got the call. The kill was necessary because the rodents, descendants of rats that reached the island by way of a shipwreck a century or more ago, were decimating the populations of two rare seabirds. And GPS helped the helicopter company do the job — via Slashdot
