Although 2012 has only just begun, the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia (SCBI-FR), already has something to celebrate in the new year: the birth of four Maned Wolf pups 5 January. It is the first litter born at SCBI-FR in two years and will play an important role in helping researchers maintain a viable, self-sustaining population under human care — via ZooBorns

Laughing Squid has been a long-time supporter or my art, and it was a special treat when they approached me to do their poster for their ten year anniversary party. Later, we turned the poster art into a full-page back cover advertisement for Hi-Fructose Magazine — via joshua ellingson

DNA tests have concluded that a mystery beast lurking in the Gloucestershire countryside, suspected of being responsible for grisly attacks on deer, is not the big cat
that locals feared.
The tests, commissioned by the National Trust last month, were the first attempts to use DNA to verify long-standing rumours that big cats live wild in parts of the UK. Two deer carcasses were found in Woodchester Park, near Stroud last month.
Scientists at the University of Warwick tested 45 samples from the two carcasses and failed to detect any cat DNA. Undeterred, local big cat enthusiasts remain convinced that something is out there. Experts said at the time that the deer bore all the hallmarks of a big cat kill — via redwolf.newsvine.com
A huge crustacean has been found lurking 7km down in the waters off the coast of New Zealand.
The creature — called a supergiant — is a type of amphipod, which are normally around 2-3cm long.
But these beasts, discovered in the Kermadec Trench, were more than 10 times bigger: the largest found measured in at 34cm.
Alan Jamieson, from the University of Aberdeen’s Oceanlab, said: It’s a bit like finding a foot-long cockroach.
I stopped and thought: ‘What on Earth was that?’ This amphipod was far bigger than I ever thought possible
Hoof stock keepers at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in the UK are delighted to announce the birth of an extremely rare Malayan tapir. The young male, named Manado, was born on 12 January to mother Malacca and father Hunter. This new arrival is the tenth successful tapir birth there, the first occurring in 1989. Now Port Lympne’s tapir house is home to two young male tapirs, as little Kejutan, born 4 months ago to mother Lidaeng, is growing fast — via ZooBorns

A specialist police unit that fights wildlife crime is joining forces with an animal charity.
The Metropolitan police’s wildlife crime unit is teaming up with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), which warned animal trafficking is a major source of revenue
for criminals.
It is the first time a charity has directly funded a Met police unit and it is hoped it will lead to more staff being recruited and trained in how to tackle wildlife crime — via redwolf.newsvine.com
