Obituary: Richard Dawson

Richard Dawson, the English-born actor and TV host who found fame in the US at the helm of game show Family Feud and in sitcom Hogan’s Heroes, has died.

A former husband of actress Diana Dors, Dawson was 79.

Born in Gosport, Hampshire, he played Corporal Peter Newkirk in World War II comedy Hogan’s Heroes for six years.

He became a panelist on TV show Match Game before hosting Family Feud for 10 years. Family Feud was copied in the UK under the name Family Fortunes.

His son Gary wrote on Facebook on Saturday: It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my father passed away this evening from complications due to oesophageal cancer.

He was surrounded by his family. He was an amazing talent, a loving husband, a great dad, and a doting grandfather. He will be missed but always remembered — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Who’s Pirating Game of Thrones, And Why?

In a few hours a new episode of Game of Thrones will appear on BitTorrent, and a few days later between 3 and 4 million people will download this unofficial release.

Statistics gathered by TorrentFreak reveal that more people are downloading the show compared to last year, when it came in as the second most downloaded TV-show of 2011. The number of weekly downloads worldwide is about equal to the estimated viewers on HBO in the US, but why?

One of the prime reasons for the popularity among pirates is the international delay in airing. In Australia, for example, fans of the show have to wait a week before they can see the latest episode. So it’s hardly a surprise that some people are turning to BitTorrent instead.

And indeed, if we look at the top countries where Game of Thrones is downloaded, Australia comes out on top with 10.1% of all downloads (based on one episode).

But delays are just part of the problem. The fact that the show is only available to those who pay for an HBO subscription doesn’t help either. This explains why hundreds of thousands of people from the US prefer to use BitTorrent — via redwolf.newsvine.com

MPAA: Piracy is NOT Theft After All

For decades the entertainment industry used the word theft to refer to piracy.

Most famous is probably the You Wouldn’t Steal a Car ad. But virtually all press releases of outfits such as the MPAA refer to stealing or theft.

All of a sudden, however, MPAA boss Chris Dodd is whistling a different tune.

After the SOPA revolt earlier this year the movie industry group realised they have to position themselves better.

We’re going to have to be more subtle and consumer-oriented, Dodd says.

Band Who Picked Up Hitchhiking John Waters

Have you been deluged with media inquiries?
Absolutely. In the beginning we were just sort of tickled with it. It’s just such a cool story that you can’t not share it. The fear is that you beat something to death but at this point I’m just still delighted with the mysticism of it. We picked up John Waters hitchhiking! What on earth? I’m just sort of rolling it over in my brain like I lost a tooth up there or something.

Now what do you say to conspiracy theorists who think that John Waters is a huge fan of Here We Go Magic, and this was just orchestrated as a publicity stunt to promote the band?
[Laughs] Wow. That would… I’d be completely awed. I would push that story, I wouldn’t mind at all! But the truth is we actually picked him up hitchhiking. It was a complete and utter coincident — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Booker T bassist Donald Dunn dies in Tokyo aged 70

Bass guitarist Donald Duck Dunn, who played with Booker T and the MGs, has died in Tokyo aged 70.

The MGs were the house band for Stax Records, and Dunn can be heard on songs such as Otis Redding’s Respect and Sam and Dave’s Hold On, I’m Comin’.

He was in Japan for a series of concerts, and had played two shows on Saturday night.

His friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour, said Dunn had died in his sleep.

Today I lost my best friend, Cropper wrote on his Facebook page. The World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live.

Miho Harasawa, a spokeswoman for Tokyo Blue Note, the last venue Dunn played, confirmed he died alone early Sunday. She had no further details — via redwolf.newsvine.com
