Gronefeld One Hertz with Dead Seconds

During the Baselworld 2011 show, the two Dutch watchmakers Tim and Bart Grönefeld are going to present their new Gronefeld One Hertz hand-wound watch that features a rare dead-seconds complication.

What’s dead seconds?

A normal mechanical watch has its second hand (if available) making VPH/3600 times per second.

If your timekeeper’s balance wheel beats at 28,800 vph (which is almost a standard for a contemporary movement,) then the seconds hand on your watch makes 28,800 / 3600 = 8 small steps to travel from one mark on the minute track to the other.

That’s why it is called a sweep second: it runs so fast that its jumps look like a continuous, flowing movement that differentiates mechanical watches from the majority of electric timepieces.

On the other hand, dead seconds complication makes the second hand make precisely 1 “big” step per second, like a quartz watch does.

Although the complication is not very popular now because a quartz watch is not deemed “cool” any more, it is still not an easy task to accomplish — via World Watch Review

Watch Out Below: Wasps Battle Ants by Dropping Them

As anyone who has been stung by one would know, wasps have anger management issues. The yellow jacket wasp is no different, but when it wants to bully something small, it eschews the stinger for something more creative. When a wasp comes upon a swarm of ants on food it wants, it will simply pick the pests up and fling them away: a previously undocumented way of dealing with a competitor — via redwolf.newsvine.com

BitTorrent Case Judge Is a Former RIAA Lobbyist and Pirate Chaser

Less than a week after her investiture ceremony, US District Court Judge Beryl Howell laid down a landmark verdict that will make it easy for copyright holders to send cash demands to people they suspect of copyright infringement. Many people called the decision into doubt, and the revelation that Judge Howell previously worked as an RIAA lobbyist and as the Managing Director of a pirate-chasing outfit hints at a conflict of interest — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Spinning the Sun’s Rays Into Fuel

Nearly all the energy we use on this planet starts out as sunlight that plants use to knit chemical bonds. Now, for the first time, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge have created a potentially cheap, practical artificial leaf that does much the same thing—providing a potentially limitless source of energy that’s easy to tap.

The new device is a silicon wafer about the shape and size of a playing card coated on either side with two different catalysts. The silicon absorbs sunlight and passes that energy to the catalysts to split water into molecules of hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is a fuel that can be either burned or used in a fuel cell to create electricity, reforming water in either case. This means that in theory, anyone with access to water can use it to create a cheap, clean, and available source of fuel. — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Mexico Makes Major Raid On Exotic Animal Traffickers

Hundreds of police raided illicit markets to crack down on the lucrative trade in wild animals and rare flowers, arresting 15 traffickers across Mexico this weekend in one of the biggest swoops of its kind.

Rich in flora and fauna, Mexico is a major hub for animal trafficking where locals buy lizards, macaws and tropical fish in city markets and smugglers move endangered species across the country’s border with the United States.

In three days of raids, authorities netted 4,725 wild plants and animals — 113 different species — including 762 parrots and other types of birds and 67 reptiles — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Erin Brockovich Pushes For Disease Cluster Law

Erin Brockovich, a US consumer health advocate whose life story was the basis for an Academy Award-winning film, urged senators Tuesday to pass a law to document disease clusters in the United States.

A disease cluster is an unusual number of health events, such as reports of cancer, grouped together in a time and location, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Brockovich, who came to prominence investigating the prevalence of cancer cases in Hinkley, California, said she has become an informal reporting agency for those who worry that something in their immediate environment is a health hazard — via redwolf.newsvine.com

Brick And White / Salvador Cejudo

Part of the row that builds the boundary of one of the best golf courses in Spain, that of the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, the plot offered magnificent views to the greenery, lakes and sun, southward. The owners were absolutely aware of this, so they placed us only one main requirement: Every room at the house should enjoy the views; a goal to achieve that eventually would be the leading thread to weave our design concept [Salvador Cejudo] — via ArchDaily
