You’ve been Drudged! Malware-squirting ads appear on websites with 100+ million visitors

Internet lowlives who used Yahoo! ads to infect potentially countless PCs with malware have struck again — using adverts on popular websites to reach millions more people.

Security researchers at MalwareBytes this week discovered the crooks running another massive campaign of ads that use the Angler Exploit Kit to infiltrate Windows PCs via vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash and web browsers.

Prominent websites including the Drudge Report and Weather.com — a pair of sites whose total traffic alone amounts to nearly 200 million visits per month — were apparently inadvertently carrying the ads, putting millions of netizens at risk.

MalwareBytes said the network carrying the ads, AdSpirit, was notified, and it has since taken down the offending adverts. The campaign has now moved to AOL’s ad network, with dodgy adverts appearing on eBay, we’re told — via redwolf.newsvine.com

The Fifth Element Stones Pillar Candle Holders / antagonizer

For my project, I wanted to recreate The Fifth Element stones that were used to kill the evil in the weapon chamber in Egypt. It was evident that the movie versions were made out of polystyrene, but I wanted mine to be a bit more durable and long lasting, and so I ended up manufacturing them out of wood. Also, following my own rules on prop creation, I decided to turn them into functional pillar candle holders that I could use to decorate my dinner table during gatherings, as a conversation piece, or simply as an everyday accent — via Instructables

Piper, Red Fox Kit / Buttonwood Park Zoo

Buttonwood Park Zoo, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, was contacted in late April by a local resident concerning a Red Fox kit. The kit’s mother had been struck by a car, leaving the juvenile an orphan. Zookeepers determined the kit was blind and could not be returned to the wild. The decision was made to raise the young fox and integrate her into the zoo’s Animal Ambassador Program — via Youtube

Totoro Plush Tutorial / cheek and stitch

I put together a fun tutorial for you: DIY Totoro Plush Tutorial. It’s a little different than the Totoros I made earlier, but still just as cute. The pattern I created is more simple and the materials are cheap and easy to find. The finished plush will be 6.5″ wide and 8″ tall (not including ears or arms). I hope you find this tutorial enjoyable and make a Totoro plush for yourself or as a gift — via cheek and stitch

Australia’s first body farm aims to answer forensic questions

Any fan of Patricia Cornwell’s crime fiction novel The Body Farm will have a reasonably good idea of what goes on in one.

For those in the dark, a body farm is a large expanse of bushland where donated human bodies are buried for the purposes of scientific study. There are several in the United States, but up until now there haven’t been any in Australia.

Some of them may be placed on the surface, some may be placed in burials, there may be other concealed environments that we’ll mimic and then we’ll just start studying the decomposition process. Shari Forbes, Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research

The country’s first body farm, the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research is due to officially open early next year. It’s come about after an exhaustive search for the right patch of land and the right partners.

It has to be a remote location but still accessible to police, to forensic investigators. It also needs the support of a university with a body donation program, says Shari Forbes, a forensic chemist and the farm’s coordinator.

Forbes can’t reveal the exact location but can say that it’s at the base of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney — via redwolf.newsvine.com
