Thousands expected to blockade ASX

Thousands of demonstrators are expected to converge on the Australian Stock Exchange Building in Melbourne from 7am to protest against capitalism and globalisation. The protests have been organised by the M1 alliance, an offshoot of the S11 group behind the demonstrations that disrupted the World Economic Forum in Melbourne last September. The alliance comprises human rights and environmental activists, unionists, students and christians who plan to highlight the negative effects of global capitalism

Forced Filtering

The ramifications of a new US law forcing public libraries to filter Internet content against their will or risk losing federal funds may impact Australia. But free-speech advocates are fighting back.

The Devil made me do it

Some of the families of those killed in the Columbine High School shootings are seeking $5 billion in punitive damages against the manufacturers and distributors of video technology — yet another wonderful example of ‘The devil made me do it’ thinking. It’s about time people learned to take responsibility for their own actions, instead of looking for a quick buck at someone else’s expense via litigation.

Never Say Die

The University of North Carolina has finally found a network server that, although missing for four years, hasn’t missed a packet in all that time. Try as they might, university administrators couldn’t find the server. IT workers tracked it down by meticulously following cable until they literally ran into a wall. The server had been mistakenly sealed behind drywall by maintenance workers.

Election Corruption

There’s nothing like selective memory when reporting the facts. USA Today announced the results of its long-anticipated re-examination of Florida ballots, declaring that Bush won. Unfortunately it forgot to report that if official hand counts in the remaining seven Florida counties had been properly counted, under two of the four counting standards used by the paper to determine valid votes, Gore would have won the entire state by 300 to 400 votes.

Pro-Lifers Inciting Violence

In an astonishing back flip, the courts have reversed a decision that barred a pro-life group from publishing their so-called ‘Nuremberg Files’ web site. This is a site that publishes ‘Wanted’ posters of abortion doctors, along with their names and home addresses. Looks like free speech wins out over inciting violence and invasion of privacy — funny how pro-lifers can justify the death of others to make their point.

Pre-empted Shooting

A New Zealand teenager is being praised by the FBI in alerting them to a Pennsylvanian teenager who alluded to planning his own school shoot-up. But some of the users of the web site, where the incident came to light, are claiming she overstepped her bounds. So apparently it would have been better for her to wait until after the fact instead of offering the boy the help he needs now — what a bunch of small-minded wankers.

Duped by a Dropout

High school dropout, Abraham Abdallah, duped more than 200 of the ‘Richest People in America’ listed in Forbes magazine by using computers in a Brooklyn library — looks like somebody’s been making fine use of the public facilities.

Smart Kid

In a nice piece of turnabout, a very bright young Sydney lad evaded the clutches of a kidnapper by stomping on the man’s foot

Death by Wheelie Bin

The combination of alcohol, wheelie bins and the world’s steepest street proved too much to resist for one Kiwi pair this weekend. But as one of the brain donors — who, I kid you not, studied physical education — managed to successfully remove herself from the gene pool, I can see an honourable mention in this year’s Darwin Awards coming her way.

Boomer Buddhism

Boomer Buddhism in America — the twisting of an ancient belief into something shallow, self-serving, yet neatly packaged into small bite-sized portions for easy consumption. It’s the religion you have when you’re not having a religion
