‘Dingo Simon’ builds sanctuary in fight to save species from extinction in wild

A Queensland disability pensioner with a love of dingoes has begun a personal crusade to save the animals from extinction in the wild.

Simon Stretton is battling biosecurity regulations and opposition from farmers as he tries to create a reservoir of purebred dingo genes to preserve wild populations.

Mr Stretton, who calls himself Dingo Simon, has started his own sanctuary at Durong in the state’s South Burnett region.

What I’m trying to do is save dingoes from extinction, basically, due to interbreeding from the wild dogs [and] also from the State Government’s excessive use of 1080 baiting, he said.

DIY cat tent / jessyratfink

This cat tent is super easy to make — you really just need a t-shirt, some wire hangers and a piece of cardboard. As a bonus, it really only takes five minutes, so if your cat ignores it you didn’t put too much effort in — via DIY cat tent

Baby Capybaras / Zoo Berlin

Zoo Berlin recently welcomed five baby Capybaras to their South American exhibit. Born just several weeks ago, the five pups, along with mother, Lucia, explored their enclosure for the first time. Careful to stay close to mother and each other, they enjoyed their time investigating various aspects of their home at the zoo — via ZooBorns

Tyrannosaurus Attacked by Flamingos / Google Campus

This statue of a fossilised Tyrannosaurus Rex stands on the Google Campus. His name is Stan. The Googleplex is also infested with a flock of plastic flamingos, which have ganged up on the dinosaur to pick the bones clean. Stan seems to not mind at all — via Neatorama

Mr Sneaky Evildoer / Igor Shpilenok

This is Mr Sneaky Evildoer. He lives near the Bogachevsky-Kronotsky estuary, in the best place there can be for the happy fox life. Abundance of fish, swans, ducks around makes the life easy. All the foxes of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve would love to live here… But Mr Evildoer does not allow them. He is a dominant male, the strongest and the smartest of local foxes, so he imposes his will on others. Sometimes he tries to dictate his wishes to people — via 500px

Cricket Enrichment / Philadelphia Zoo

The kittens got a special treat recently: live crickets!

At the Zoo, our black-footed cats are fed a commercial mix of raw meat formulated specially for exotic cats. They also receive enrichment in the form of small rodents and insects like mealworms and crickets, all of which is managed by our nutritionist to ensure all of their dietary needs are met.

The brown paper bags you see in this video contained crickets — until the kittens discovered them. This is the first time they had ever encountered live crickets, so they were a bit uncertain at first, but it wasn’t long before their predatory instincts kicked in — via Youtube

Here Are The First Wolf Pups in the Cascade Mountains Since The 1940s

Remember the wandering wolf, OR-7, who traveled from Oregon to California and back while wearing a GPS collar? The US Fish and Wildlife Service discovered that he’s now a proud dad to at least three pups, thanks to some camera trap photos.

The pups are also historic; OR-7 and his mate are the first wolves known to have bred and produced offspring in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains (which stretch from British Columbia to Northern California) since the 1940s! They’re a small, adorable conservation success story — via redwolf.newsvine.com

‘This is last chance for the Scottish wildcat’

Conservationists battling to save the Scottish wildcat say a remote area in the north-west Highlands presents the only chance for the species’ survival.

The Highland tiger is one of the world’s most endangered animals. Experts estimate there may be only 35 pure-bred individuals left. This compares with fewer than 2,500 wild Bengal tigers and makes the wildcat 70 times rarer than the giant panda.

The Ardnamurchan peninsula, which has some of Scotland’s wildest landscapes and few human residents, has been identified as a sanctuary. The Wildcat Haven Project aims to protect the species by catching and neutering feral and hybrid wildcats in the area to prevent them breeding with pure wildcats.

Geneticist Paul O’Donoghue, from Chester University, the scientific adviser to the project, said: Feral cats are the biggest danger to the future of the Scottish wildcat. They interbreed and you end up with hybrids of varying degrees.

The aim is to reduce and eventually remove the feral cat population from this area. We want to catch all the feral cats, neuter them and put them back where we found them, and eventually the population will die out over time.

Dr O’Donoghue and Kent-based charity the Aspinall Foundation took over the project from the Scottish Wildcat Association (SWA) last year — via redwolf.newsvine.com
