The Orange Cube / Jakob + Macfarlane Architects

Jakob + Macfarlane Architects have designed The Orange Cube in Lyon, France.

The ambition of the urban planning project for the old harbor zone, developed by VNF (Voies Naviguables de France) in partnership with Caisse des Dépôts and Sem Lyon Confluence, was to reinvest the docks of Lyon on the river side and its industrial patrimony, bringing together architecture and a cultural and commercial program — via CONTEMPORIST

Dental College / Romi Khosla Design Studios

There is something special about teaching hospitals that make them different from other institutions. The Dental College of Jamia had these characteristics. It serves to provide dental care to the people in surrounding areas and is also one of the primary teaching centres of Dentistry in India. So at one end the users are the common public and at the other end the users are the medical students. The College was therefore a place where three users interacted with each other. The common public, the doctors who treated and taught and thirdly the students who learned and practiced. The programme was therefore conceived as a series of capsules which were designed by Romi Khosla Design Studios to act as nodes for the three users — via ArchDaily

Hide Sportster SP-20

We don’t often feature modern Harley-Davidson customs, but this one is worth closer inspection. It’s the latest machine from acclaimed Japanese builder Hide Motorcycles (aka HIDEMO) and it’s based on a 2003 XL1200S. The standard Sportster, despite it’s low 28” seat height, always looked a little high off the ground, but the Hide SP-20 looks properly slammed. That’s due to a new tank, rear fender and spoked wheels; the front fender has been removed to improve aesthetics still further — via Bike EXIF

Frank Owen Gehry

Frank Owen Gehry, CC (born Frank Owen Goldberg; February 28, 1929) is a Canadian American Pritzker Prize-winning architect based in Los Angeles, California.

His buildings, including his private residence, have become tourist attractions. His works are often cited as being among the most important works of contemporary architecture in the 2010 World Architecture Survey, which led Vanity Fair to label him as the most important architect of our age.

Gehry’s best-known works include the titanium-covered Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain; MIT Stata Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles; Experience Music Project in Seattle; Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis; Dancing House in Prague; the Vitra Design Museum and MARTa Museum in Germany; and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. But it was his private residence in Santa Monica, California, which jump-started his career, lifting it from the status of “paper architecture” – a phenomenon that many famous architects have experienced in their formative decades through experimentation almost exclusively on paper before receiving their first major commission in later years — via Architecture Blog

Oris Big Crown X1 Calculator

Next month the independent Swiss watchmaking brand will officially present its new Oris Big Crown X1 Calculator automatic pilot’s watch.

Well, I guess most of you have already noticed that the watch has a certain Breitling smell about it.

Oris Big Crown X1 Calculator automatic chronograph pilot’s watch

The source of the odor is, of course, the fluted bezel and the slide rule that makes the upcoming watch very much alike the legendary Navitimer and other aviator’s watches from the great B — via World Watch Review

House In Sedrun / Flavio Loretz

In the western part of Graubünden 1450 meters above sea level, this 3-storey house designed by Flavio Loretz is situated in the eastern edge of the village. It stands in the company of other single-family dwellings, with close proximity to a large railway viaduct.

The body of the building reacts to the topography of the land; turning like its neighbouring valley-sided houses to provide great views of the village and moun- tains. The construction offers a contemporary response to the traditional typo- logy of Surselva, where the lower doors are solid and differ to the upper doors — via ArchDaily

F-house / ARCH 4

House of 1800 square meters spread-eagle on the site, designed by ARCH 4, but does not look flat and squat due to a considerable height floor (4 m) and found remarkably slitting of facades. The fact, that the horizontal division, given the masonry brick and lath wood finish, interrupted by the strong vertical accents – modules windows and openings, chimney, wooden columns — via ArchDaily

YNH / HHF Architects

I [HHF Architects] thought mainly how to connect with time axis of surrounding history of the site that a military commander made a fort during the Age of Civil Wars (15-16th century) . The site of north/west is road and south/east is the neighboring house, so the major theme is the way of taking a sunlight. I designed 3-floor void as light-tube by analogy of fort like Scotish Tower-House. The room on each floor are arranged around light-tube like a square in the house and the inner-opening facing the void make a role as linking by one’s eyes between the room — via ArchDaily

Honda CB160

The most extraordinary thing about this build isn’t the bike itself—a humble Honda CB160—but the story behind it. Because the ‘Rusty Rocket’ was constructed almost entirely out of spare parts, collected over a year. Owner Scott Elder visited local vintage racers in Portland, Oregon, and dug through their cast away piles in the corners, sheds, and backyards, finding a fender here, and a headlight there. There are a few exceptions such as the pipe, intake manifolds, and leatherwork, but almost everything else was borrowed or stolen—or ceremoniously traded for beer. A daily cafe racer built, literally, on a coffee-cup budget — via Bike EXIF

Nakagin Capsule Tower / Kisho Kurokawa

Architect Kisho Kurokawa was very innovative in his creation of the Nakagin Capsule Tower in 1972, which was the first capsule architecture design. The module was created with the intention of housing traveling businessmen that worked in central Tokyo during the week. It is a prototype for architecture of sustainability and recycleability, as each module can be plugged in to the central core and replaced or exchanged when necessary — via ArchDaily

House Shmukler / Tribe Studio Architects

This house is conceived by Tribe Studio Architects as a series of boxes suspended in a large shed-like space. The private spaces of the house, the bedrooms and bathrooms, hover over the public spaces. Each bedroom is expressed as a box, pulled apart from its fellows creating a series of double height voids. The edges of the private spaces describe the public volumes — via ArchDaily

Louis Vuitton Voyagez Tambour Chronograph Watch

The design is very unique, and even though the Louis Vuitton fashion influence is strong, their watches are more than just a fancy case around a cheap movement (a la Gucci watches, for example). The Tambour’s modicum of eccentricity is what I like most. This particular model is a straight-3 chrono with tachymeter and date function. Price – about $6,000, it will be available June 2011 — via Perpetuelle.com Blog

House Carqueija / Bento e Azevedo Arquitetos Associados

Union Station Bicycle Transit Center / KGP design

At the cusp of a livable cities movement, this facility is a highly visible catalyst promoting bicycle use and alternative transportation options by providing secure parking, rental, and retail uses. At the doorstep of Washington’s major transportation hub, Union Station, the sleek veiled form by KGP design reflects the technology of its contents while complimenting its eminent Beaux Art neighbors — via ArchDaily

Porchdog House / Marlon Blackwell Architect

The Biloxi Model Homes are affordable prototype houses designed for the Architecture for Humanity Model Home Program. The program provides design services and financial assistance for families in East Biloxi whose houses were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

The proposition of raising a home up to 11’ above the ground introduces several issues that challenge the traditional notion of the Gulf Coast streetscape and affiliated porch culture. Among these is the very concept of having a porch that is an extension of the interior space. In addition, the massing of a proportionally tall house speaks more of isolation than of the construct of meaningful social spaces through a series of houses enclosing the street. The PorchDog by Marlon Blackwell Architect addresses these challenges while complying with new environmental, structural, and FEMA regulations — via ArchDaily
