La Quinta Cove Bungalow / Walter White

This sweet little California mid century classic in La Quinta, a resort town in the Coachella Valley just 25 miles south-east of Palm Springs, boasts not only historical designation but also architectural pedigree.

The 77 square metre two-bedroom was designed in 1958 by architect and industrial designer Walter White, who was instrumental in shaping the aesthetics of the desert modernism movement in and around Palm Springs, in addition to creating the hyperbolic paraboloid roof structure, aka the saddle roof.

This particular residence, features a unique three-armed pinwheel floor plan and a low-slung, slightly butterflied roof that hangs over the entire footprint of the house. Clerestory windows and sliding glass doors bring natural light into the white interiors while also framing views of the surrounding desert landscape.

One of four bungalows designed by White in La Quinta Cove during the 1940s and ’50s, the property at 53965 Avenida Obregon includes a garden and a newly built, detached studio. It’s offered at $249,000 after a recent $31,000 price cut — via Curbed
