Hisui / Kari Voutilainen

The masterpiece shown here was created by master watchmaker Kari Voutlinainen along with the artistic talents of Kitamura Tatsuo. Tatsuo, working under the art name Unryuan, is one of Japan’s leading contemporary lacquer artists. The hand-assembled dial is an astounding mosaic of thousand of small pieces of gold and shell set in lacquer. It required well over a thousand hours of work to complete. Specifically, the raw materials for its creation are: Kinpun (gold dust), Jyunkin-itakane (gold leaf), Yakou-gai (shell of great green turban) and Awabi-gai (abalone shell from New Zealand) — via Perpétuelle
