GPS Solar Astron / Seiko

Solar Astron / Seiko

Seiko’s new GPS Solar Astron can pinpoint your location on planet Earth and automatically set itself accordingly. You might recognise the Astron name, since that was what Seiko called their first quartz watch in 1969. But that’s where the similarities end. This Astron is solar powered and contains GPS technology, requiring very careful management of power to run properly. Because of this power management issue as well as the size requirements of the GPS receivers, the Astron is 47mm in diameter and rather thick. The silicon strap helps it wear a little easier than it might with the bracelet, but there is still no getting around the fact that this is a very big watch — via HODINKEE
